I remember getting to their death scenes and it sort of didn't register the first time because they really were glossed over. I did a double take and had to go back and re-read.

This is exactly what happened with me when I read Sirius' death. I had read three pages before I was like 'Wut?' and went back to read it over.

The first time I read about Sirius dying I was mentally saying "noooooo :( " I really wanted Harry to be able to get away from those frickin' Dursleys.

I missed Hedwig's death the first time through, and nearly missed Tonks and Lupin.

With Sirius, I didn't understand he was dead right off. Everyone seems to be making a big deal out of his falling through a doorway!! WAIT.

I...read the books when they first came out and this is the first I'm realizing that/learning of Hedwig's death.
