Like, if you make a female character a male character and keep everything else the same, suddenly the character becomes more dynamic and admirable and you slash them with everyone. The Little Mermaid is a good example here, because I feel like a lot of people HATE on Ariel a ton for being stupid, irresponsible, selfish, gullible, falling in love with someone she barely knew, etc. but when she gets genderbent to a guy, suddenly he's brave, active, escaping from an oppressive society that looks down on homosexuality, romantic, etc. Or maybe that's just me. It kind of horrified me that I criticize female characters so harshly and yet basically give male characters a pass (and yes, I know part of it is because male and female characters are portrayed different ways, and playing a stereotype straight is much MUCH different from subverting a stereotype, but still, I don't think Ariel as a character plays much to female stereotypes other than the falling in love instantly thing).
So tl;dr: I guess a F->M genderbend can make me realize how awesome a character is all along by removing some of my own internalized sexism. I don't have enough experience with genderbends to know if that's a common thing or just me.
As for M->F genderbends, I guess I only really heard about these in the context of a secret that talked about how they're used to turn a popular slash pairing into a het self-insert one. So the male gaze thing mentioned in the secret kind of confuses me. Can someone give me examples or something? Oh, I guess I've also seen M->F genderbends to create a femslash pairing in a fandom where there's basically only The One Female Character, but those have all been done by female authors, so again, I don't associate it with male gaze at all. I guess I have seen some facepalmy M->F genderbends where "becoming a girl" somehow means "covering one-fifth of the skin that was originally covered" because it's "cute" and "girly", so I guess that's what OP means?
