Re: fandom is kinda dumb, yeah.
Oh, sweet screaming monkeys, "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs." I read that in high school when I was going through The Essential Ellison. That messed me up so bad. I didn't realize just how "horror" his stuff could be when I started that volume, and that one--well, I recognize nowthe writing technique of mixing real-life maturities and crudities of adulthood with horror-story elements of total moral collapse, but I was at an age for that to seriously mess with my head.
Maturity does change how I read him. I reread "Strange Wine" maybe twenty years later and it felt different than the first time. Like, maybe the first time I thought it was deep and the second time I thought it might just be a sick joke?

re: Strange Wine, yeah. I remember it gave me chills when I was younger. Now, re-reading it, it could be Ellison's little wink or something, although I think he wouldn't have made Kaw's life quite so miserable if that were true. It might be Ellison's "Things can always be worse." Which, now that I've had real effing tragedy in my life, I can say, as a philosophy? Is pretty gold.
