I think Elsa's popularity will fade when a new Disney princess movie comes out. Rapunzel was extremely popular until Merida.

I dunno, I have a feeling that a lot of people said the same thing about Ariel, but twenty-five years later she's still one of Disney's biggest money makers--despite Belle being released very soon afterwards.

No, Rapunzel maintained dominion as reigning favorite new princess over Merida, even after Merida was introduced. In fact, only a little after Merida's movie, and she's basically forgotten. In terms of amount of merchandise, she's fairly low.

Merida may not click with the merchandise-needy 6-year-olds, but she sure as hell connected with the teens and 20somethings.

I'm pretty sure that those same teens and twenty-somethings are now singing "Let It Go" at the top of their lungs.

Yep. Merida wasn't even that popular with that age group as far as I can tell--the biggest reason is that she wasn't 'their' princess. In fact, 'their' princess is currently the most popular one: Ariel. Merida didn't resonate like Rapunzel or Elsa have. Part of Merida's problem is she's really great as an idea, but in practice, she's more a brat and doesn't even have too many redeeming features outside of 'look, I can use a bow! I'm such a proactive princess, so feminist! Despite totally selling out my mom and being unrepentant until the point where I basically killed her, I'm just so much of a BETTER role model than domestic women like Cinderella!'

Sorry, I'm letting my Merida dislike leak into that. Objectively, there's not as much merch for Merida, for young or older girls.

TBH I liked Elinor more the Merida.

Interesting. I actually find that flaws (brattiness, selfishness, making mistakes that have real consequences and then learning from them, etc.) tend to make me like a princess more. I really love Merida and Ariel for that reason, and not so much Rapunzel and Elsa (who have issues, but ones mostly caused by an external source, essentially).
