That's just anime face. Look at the body language. The guy nails it.

+1. I recently watched the first third of Spirited Away with my mother, and even though she wasn't interested in the movie at all and is not really an animation person she was incredibly impressed by the way the characters moved. Especially when Chihiro is running down the stairs; Mom actually paused it and said, "Man, look at how real that looks. Can you imagine how much effort it took to animate that to look just right?"

very few people actually have their arms up in the air when they run downstairs but Chihiro almost never puts her damn arms down. That and her constant screaming made me think what an awesome movie Spirited Away would have been without her.

She's a Japanese kid and she moves like one.

^This.

I went to the Ghibli museum when I visited Japan, and there was a short animation they showed about a friendship/romance between a... mosquito and a fish? Or maybe a fish and a water strider. But in any case, neither one had facial expressions to speak of, and yet it was one of the most moving things I'd seen that year, because of extremely well done body language for both.

I don't get the "anime face" thing. I mean, anime faces are rigid when they're resting but, if anything, anime faces are generally way too expressive, like more expressive than any human face could be because your muscles and bones and skin prohibit that much facial contraction.

Cartoonish exaggeration is a thing. Depends on the animation style, though. Not all anime characters demonstrate big rubber-band grins. I'd say Miyazaki's character expressions are generally within the range of normal.

Yes the body language is just sooo expressive.
