That's just anime face. Look at the body language. The guy nails it.

+1. I recently watched the first third of Spirited Away with my mother, and even though she wasn't interested in the movie at all and is not really an animation person she was incredibly impressed by the way the characters moved. Especially when Chihiro is running down the stairs; Mom actually paused it and said, "Man, look at how real that looks. Can you imagine how much effort it took to animate that to look just right?"

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
very few people actually have their arms up in the air when they run downstairs but Chihiro almost never puts her damn arms down. That and her constant screaming made me think what an awesome movie Spirited Away would have been without her.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
She's a Japanese kid and she moves like one.

^This.

I went to the Ghibli museum when I visited Japan, and there was a short animation they showed about a friendship/romance between a... mosquito and a fish? Or maybe a fish and a water strider. But in any case, neither one had facial expressions to speak of, and yet it was one of the most moving things I'd seen that year, because of extremely well done body language for both.

I don't get the "anime face" thing. I mean, anime faces are rigid when they're resting but, if anything, anime faces are generally way too expressive, like more expressive than any human face could be because your muscles and bones and skin prohibit that much facial contraction.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Cartoonish exaggeration is a thing. Depends on the animation style, though. Not all anime characters demonstrate big rubber-band grins. I'd say Miyazaki's character expressions are generally within the range of normal.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes the body language is just sooo expressive.

I've always liked his scenery/backgrounds more than the characters, tbh. They're gorgeous, especially scenes with water, or scenes where the wind's blowing through the treetops or grass.

He does make the most beautiful backgrounds. You feel like you're looking at a painting.

I love his characters, but his scenery is always simply gorgeous.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to agree. I just don't like his character design... at least other animes give their characters funny hair or eyes or something; Ghibli character design is supposed to be more realistic but end up looking bland. IDK how many more girls with puffy sleeves/pants they can design before they get bored.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
If your idea of creative design is giving characters "funny hair or eyes or something" then I think I'll stick with Studio Ghibli's approach.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think what the person is clearly saying, butthurt anon, is that at least boring anime face can vary it a little with hair and eyes. It feels like almost all the same characters have basically the same face.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a common enough criticism of anime in general. Once an artist settles on a style, they tend to stick with it and many of their characters in series and across series have a similar look, barring the ones who look grossly different for being foreign/magic/alien etc.

Thank you. I grew up loving Miyazaki's films but I have never been impressed by the animation style or animation itself. It's pretty and nicely designed but never WHOA! how long did it take them to animate that? Especially when you compare them to Disney. Like compare the sea scene of Ponyo to The Little Mermaid and the Little Mermaid is animated way better. And it's twenty years older! Though Ponyo is one of my nephew's favorite movies. And he would ticked to hear me say that. But I believe it's true.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So how would the clock tower scenes from Castle of Cagliostro and the Great Mouse Detective compare, do you think? It's not Ghibli, but it'd be a better direct example since Musker was paying homage, iirc.

I would have to look at the two to refresh my memory.

The water in Ponyo looked distractingly terrible. YEAH I GOT WHAT THEY WERE GOING FOR, but hand-drawn water doesn't need to look that terrible.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-19 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Miyazaki films are very dedicated to realistic moments and body language, but it sometimes feels like it's to a fault because there's very little cartoonish exaggeration.

I feel his movies are more about atmosphere than characters sometimes - but, that being said, as other have said the body language is pretty damn good.

I absolutely adore Ghibli films, but I made the mistake of pointing out on tumblr around the time they were shrieking about Frozen that Ghibli teen heroines all seem to suffer from same face syndrome too and believe me that was a trip.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-20 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so late that I doubt anyone will see this, but his style specifically hearkens back to noh and kabuki theatre where the characters all wear masks denoting their expressions and then use their bodies to actually emote beyond that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-22 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Okay then. That makes so much sense.
