Anything non-contemporary.

Bad future. Not post-apocalypse, but general dystopia/horrible things happening. Blame the "Rock of Ages" arc in Grant Morrison's JLA for renewing my interest in such things.

Mob boss AU. Specifically I want a fic where Steve is the boss of an Irish mob gang. With Bucky as his body guard/hitman/bedwarmer. I don't know if I like the idea of skinny, unassuming Steve or strong, muscular Steve.

Fallen London based AUs of everything. Especially things that are not creepy already.

I kinda like the idea of entire stories being relocated a mile underground and seeing how things change when the strange fallen london logic applies to everything.

Bed and Breakfast AU(I just started writing one.)
Fantasy with lots of world building AUs
For the very specific kind: Last Exile, Alex didn't die, and eventually marries Sophia AUs.
Modern day AUs weather its just normal daily life, modern fantasy, or science fiction.

A "what if someone had/hadn't lived/left", but in a way that's NOT a cop out and/or "I just didn't like that twist." I've seen it done well, but not often enough.

Barfly AUs, cyberpunk AUs, rural pastoral idyll AUs, 1930s Shanghai or Istanbul espionage AUs, fin de siecle Vienna or Paris AUs, Gothic fantasy AU

i don't actually read a lot of AU fic tho so it is entirely possible that these are super common ideas. i should probably read more of it TBH

Give me all the '20s-'40s gangster/noir AUs. And especially art of same.

Adventure Archaeology AUs, with optional supernatural curses and monsters. Indiana Jones, the Mummy, Romancing the Stone, Relic Hunters, the Librarian, all of that.

Ghost Hunter AUs, from modern day paranormal researchers to Victorian Spiritualists to Kolchak the Night Stalker fusions. I see a lot of paranormal AUs, but they're mostly vampire and werewolf, urban fantasy style. I want more ghosts and parascience and psychic powers.

Prohibition AUs, like all of them, for every fandom ever. I will never, ever get tired of them.

Dieselpunk, 1930s/40s/50s Superhero AUs. Specific, yes, I just want flying cars and noir and that sort of Astroboy/WWII-era Captain America/Rocketeer aesthetic. High steel, atomic power, diesel-electric flight, magnetic monorails, jetpacks, surface utopia with underlying darkness. That sort of thing.

Angel AUs, less the sort with the angel/demon sex and more the sort with the endless war between Heaven and Hell and the weary soldiers on both sides who have to keep fighting it, because there are several of my fandoms where the casts fit very well

Royal Navy AU (bonus: Royal Navy in space)
IN SPACE AU (pseudo-Star Trek, on a space station, etc.)

Also, more canon divergence AU (For Want of a Nail, Fix-Its, Groundhog Day time loops, not terrible Peggy-Sues, just plan ol' taking canon events a different, but believable way).

Stranded/trapped AU

superpowers! most of the stuff in the tag on ao3 is xmen or avengers bc they count the 'still have powers' tag as the same thing and it's so annoying!! and besides those two it's the same 5 or so fandoms over and over

and i'll always take more daemon aus

Fantasy

Mob/mafia/crime

1700s/Regency

Ghost busters, ghost hunters, paranormal investigators

mystery/detective

Las Vegas/professional gambler

pirates

orphan (changing the character's family background/origin)

Space colony

Those are just a few. I love AUs, the more bizarre, the better.

baseball

Washington DC.

Alternatively: small town America.

Both scenarios provide ample opportunity for drama.

TIME TRAVEL AU.

I really like political AU's, actually. Wish there were more of them. When I do find them in my fandoms they tend to be RPS.

As well as mafia AU's and pirate AU's, of course. And Star Wars AU's. All the Star Wars AU's. I'm sure there's plenty of them, but I rarely run into them on my own. (Though I DO remember SGA having one!)

Storm Chasing AUs are not a thing and that upsets me! Think of the potential! Going through dangerous situations together and bonding, rivalry with other chase teams, all the things!
