I live in a pretty, happy little city, but it has the worst dating scene. If there was a national contest, this place would win, easy.

There are very men my age, and the ones I do meet are uneducated and unsocial. Like, we go to the movies and they stare at me during the funny parts to see if I laugh. That kind of unsocial.

Oh yeah. I asked him what he liked to do and he said: "That's a good question."

He wasn't a bad person, he just really needs to get out of the house and put some thought and effort into his life.

Oh god. I knew a guy like that my freshmen year of college. I'd try to initiate two-sided conversations but they all seemed to fall along the same lines:

"So what do you like to do?"

"I don't know. Stuff."

"Okay, what kind of movies do you like to watch?"

"I'm not a big movie person."

"You read any books?"

"Not really."

"Okay, let me rephrase this. What do you physically do when you go home after class?"

"I don't know. Stuff."

It went a little bit better than that. And I'll give him credit for being better than what came before him. (The guy I dated prior to this guy called the waitress a bitch and called me a woman-driver.)

But, the guy needs to do something. Go for a hike. Swim. Puzzles. Something that doesn't involve staring at a screen and pressing buttons.

I'm not sure what he meant. It's not like he offered to drive or anything. Or help with gas. Really, his redeeming value is that I get sympathy points whenever I bring him up.

I also went on a date once where any time I mentioned an interest of mine (music, movies or TV) he'd write it down and say he'd have to check it out. It seemed so bizarre, like he had no interests himself and just wanted to please me which I found more annoying.

I'd like to whine HOW THE HELL DO THESE KINDS OF PEOPLE GET DATES but then I'm sure there's someone out there who's into being watched.

I occasionally help out his dad to earn some extra money. He asked me out two minutes after I met him while his dad was two feet away. That's he got the date.
