I'm not a fan, and when I was younger I definitely played into the bashing Twilight phase, but here's the thing: it's not really as abusive as people play it off. One of my least favorite trends in fandom is to figure out ways to label relationships as abusive if you don't like them. Most of the points that list their relationship abusive as either misleading, lying, or lacking context.

There are definitely some shitty things, but most of the actual shitty things are 'romance trope' shitty things that I don't feel like we have to blame this series more for than others.

I don't think Twilight has the kind of influence you thought. A lot of the time, the type of girls to pine for an Edward Cullen were pining for their fucked up idea of a perfect guy to begin with--they just didn't have a name or image to articulate it with. I don't think that kind of story creates problems, it's just an outlet for expressing them.

As someone whose teenage experience is older than Twilight, I think you have a point. Twilight didn't make Edward Cullen a popular "perfect boyfriend" model, Twilight got popular because Edward fit the model of the type of "perfect boyfriend" character that was already popular.

DING!DING!DING! We have a winner...

Anyway, you only need to read romance novels to realise it's not just teenage girls...
