Re: Advice thread

I clench my teeth, sometimes when I am asleep but mostly when I am awake (not consciously). My dentist has told me its causing problems. (Wear and apparently an bruising on my gums?) I could get a mouthguard for the night clenching, but any advice on stopping during the day when usually I don't even realize I am doing it when my jaw starts hurting?

I totally understand not realizing you're clenching your jaw, and then you manually unclench and it takes an honest effort.

I have two possible solutions but you might have to train yourself to do them. I do them unconsciously and always have. My jaw tends to lock down hard when its shut but keeping my teeth apart a little ways stops this so I sometimes lay my tongue between my back molars (just pick a side). I don't bite down, or not hard at least. My tongue's just sitting there and remains any time that my teeth are closed. There's just enough pressure from my teeth to keep my tongue in place but it doesn't hurt at all and I can keep it there for hours if need be and don't even notice it.

The other thing I do is fold my tongue back and just let it rest against the roof of my mouth. That seems to need just enough space to keep my teeth from biting down and the pressure from the roof of my mouth keeps my tongue folded so I don't have to think about it. I can keep it like this for a long time too. I honestly don't even realize I'm doing it or that I need to do it -- my body just does it naturally whenever there's too much tension in my jaw.

I don't know how to make it a subconscious thing but maybe if you keep trying it, you'll get used to it and then you'll do it unconsciously just like you were clenching your teeth.

I forgot to mention. For the "tongue between the molars" thing, use the back part of the tongue -- the part that's right next to the molars so that the tongue is completely relaxed. You should still be able to speak with your tongue in this position if you needed to. You're just using the edge of your tongue -- just enough so that it doesn't feel like you're pinching. I can also bite down on the back of my tongue with both sets of molars at once, which is the most relaxing and unobtrusive way to do it. I think I have to move my tongue forward to do it but figure out what works best for you. Basically, use your tongue to keep your teeth apart somehow.

Hope that helps :)

Seconding the tongue things. My TMJ was really aggravated by my clenching, but it was something I've done my entire life and I didn't know how to stop. You're still going to catch yourself clenching unconciously, but when you're aware of the problem and correct it, eventually you'll stop.
