Eh... the problem isn't so much white fans HATING POC characters, as white fans saying that they totally love POC characters and then just quietly ignoring them and/or shuffling them offstage. This goes quadruple for shipping.

This exactly. If it were one or two characters here and there, sure. But a constant pattern of POCs getting erasing, ignored or demonized... well, you can only put your head so far into the sand and scream "NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE!" for so long.

Ah, ignore them. Tumblr lives in a universe where everything is black or white and everyone is literally Hitler or an innocent babe.

This causes them to generalize a group based on one person (almost like stereotyping) because they don't understand the concept of shades of grey (which they should considering how much they whine about the book(.

This was my thought, honestly. OP spends a lot of the secret saying how not-racist they are. Too much of it.

I don't know about the others, but I love Melinda May and I'm white although I don't quite see how it could be relevant. She's awesome and she's the only reason why I still watch Shield. The actress was also really worth watching in the trainwreck that was Stargate Universe - thanks for Robert Carlyle.

I understand POC in fandom wanting to support POC characters. But man... media is a mess. Like I think that there is some subconscious racism wrt how fandom interacts with characters who are POC. But I think there's also a problem with not as many good roles being written for POC which means there are less POC characters who attract fans.

The thing is I do think considering them as "POC" first and not characters is part of the problem. In the country where I currently live the term POC is considered as racist. Actually talking about different races is considered as racist.

Honestly, I'd say the latter is probably a bigger problem.

For instance, I'm a big fan of the Walking Dead video games. Both of the two main characters we've had so far are black, and my experience in fandom has been that people love them both. They're well-written and developed so well that it's almost impossible NOT to like them and want to root for them.

It's not just the main characters, either - there's a lot of diversity within the secondary characters too, and again, they tend to get plenty of love too. In fact, the character who gets some of the most hate (Ben) is a white guy.

Give people good POC characters that are more than just bit parts or stereotypes and the fans WILL like them.

Racism needs to be called out. The problem arises when people try to conflate fandom stupidity with racism or sexism or homophobia, etc. Here's the thing: fandom can be shitty and bratty, but this is pretty across the board. Female characters, gay characters, and POC DO get bashed, but bashing them in and of itself isn't racism/homophobia/sexism/ableism/etc.

You see this a lot in shipping. Writers of fanfic will take a character and write them as a complete jerk who is shrill and abusive. They rip the character to shreds just because he or she gets in the way of a preferred pairing. And it's immature as hell. But it's not an "ism" -- it's just immaturity. Case in point: how many fanfics rip apart Ron Weasley and have him depicted as an abusive, inconsiderate jerk so that Harry can sweep in and "save" Hermione? A LOT. And Ron is cis, able-bodied, heterosexual, white, and male. Doing this same thing to a female character or a POC is just people (again) being stupid.

Calling a female character a "whore" or a "slut"? Sexist statements
Saying a gay couple is gross? Homophobic statement
Saying a black woman "don't need no man"? Racist statement
Writing characters as stereotypes? Prejudicial

But racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. have MEANINGS.

It also doesn't help when some fans react to someone saying they don't like a female/POC/gay character by immediately yelling "Sexist/racist/homophobic" without listening to why people dislike the characters. Sometimes people dislike characters for reason not related to their sex/race/orientation.
