I understand POC in fandom wanting to support POC characters. But man... media is a mess. Like I think that there is some subconscious racism wrt how fandom interacts with characters who are POC. But I think there's also a problem with not as many good roles being written for POC which means there are less POC characters who attract fans.

The thing is I do think considering them as "POC" first and not characters is part of the problem. In the country where I currently live the term POC is considered as racist. Actually talking about different races is considered as racist.

Actually it's much more balanced: about 10% of Arabs and 5% of Blacks according to my boyfriend - I'm actually British.

According to your own logic, you're being racist by mentioning that fact. Because apparently racism is solved by ignoring differences instead of accepting them.

Except that's not what I said? I meant that the word "race" was viewed as inherently racist and that people did not use it. It doesn't mean that they ignore differences, especially the socio-economical ones as they are often linked with racism, which they are trying to fight, more or less successfully.

I do understand what you mean - I'm from Germany and throwing around the word "Rasse" is bound to raise some eyebrows. Because you really don't want to use this particular word. But that doesn't mean there is no discussion about representation of ethnic minorities in the media - we just use different words than "race". (The way a lot of people use that word today - for different skin colours instead of actual race -is incorrect, anyway.)

Honestly, I'd say the latter is probably a bigger problem.

For instance, I'm a big fan of the Walking Dead video games. Both of the two main characters we've had so far are black, and my experience in fandom has been that people love them both. They're well-written and developed so well that it's almost impossible NOT to like them and want to root for them.

It's not just the main characters, either - there's a lot of diversity within the secondary characters too, and again, they tend to get plenty of love too. In fact, the character who gets some of the most hate (Ben) is a white guy.

Give people good POC characters that are more than just bit parts or stereotypes and the fans WILL like them.

And lol fucking Ben. I let him fall from the bell tower. He did not deserve to survive the zombie apocalypse. I mean. Who sees an axe bracing two doors closed and does not stop to think that maybe those doors are being braced closed for a reason and maybe he shouldn't remove the axe.

To be fair, that was kind of the point of the character. He was a kid forced into a situation that he never really learned how to deal with it. He saw all his friends die and has no idea what happened to his family but their probably dead. And he never had anyone to fall back on. He kept making stupid mistakes and never having a chance to learn. And, to be honest, he kind of represent a good percentage of the population and how they would deal with the zombie apocalypse.

Sorry, went on a ramble. I just like Ben and his character.
