AGENCY

Has never had any meaning since it started being used regularly in fandom to talk about how characters are written. "This character has no agency" is a way to say "I don't like the way this character is written" and still sound smart even though you can't explain why you don't like the way they're written. It never has anything to do with how much agency they have. It's like the meta version of calling a character a Mary Sue.

That makes me sad, because I find the concept of agency so useful.

What is agency supposed to mean or represent?

Essentially, the ability to make meaningful choices, take action, or otherwise affect one's situation. If a character has no agency, they are passive and powerless, and frequently have been made that way by circumstances beyond their control.
