Words that don't mean anything anymore (to you)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Based on one of the secrets from yesterday, which word(s) no longer holds any meaning to you? For me it's "internalized misogyny". I'm sure there are times when it makes sense to bring it up, but most of the time I've seen it it's been to discredit and shut down anyone who disagrees with the person who says it, and now whenever I see it, I just roll my eyes.

Same with the other "internalized -isms". It just feels like a cheap way to brush someone off, without actually considering their point. (Not necessarily in yesterday's thread, just in general to me).

It's really annoying, because I feel like it could be an actually useful term, if I didn't see it all the time as "you disagreed with me? That's just because you're too weak to block out societies viewpoints, unlike me, so sit down and shut up."

This doesn't really happen much to me, but there are a lot of words that I don't often use because I realize that it has happened to other people. "Problematic", "educate", um, I know there are others... I generally prefer to spell out "implies some nasty things about [group] even though I'm sure it's unintentional" rather than saying -ist.

It sucks because it's a legitimate thing, but it shouldn't be used as an accusation, or as leverage to win an argument.

Privilege.

It's just background static to me at this point. Something said to either 1) shut the other person up ("Check your privilege.") or just something thrown around to make your rant/essay/opinion should deep and open minded. ("As a white woman, I understand my privilege, so I think that all white people should blah, blah, blah.")

As soon as someone throws that word into a conversation my brain goes, "Nope. I'm out of here." And I zone out.

Problematic, privilege, most -isms, internalized anything. Signal boost. If someone says, "This is important," on Tumblr I assume it isn't OR is some kind of overreaction.

Especially if they say, "Oh, my God, you guys" before "This is important."

AGENCY

Has never had any meaning since it started being used regularly in fandom to talk about how characters are written. "This character has no agency" is a way to say "I don't like the way this character is written" and still sound smart even though you can't explain why you don't like the way they're written. It never has anything to do with how much agency they have. It's like the meta version of calling a character a Mary Sue.

That makes me sad, because I find the concept of agency so useful.

What is agency supposed to mean or represent?

Privilege and most -isms. They're thrown around way too cavalierly to mean anything.

"Literally" and "if you don't reblog this".

Literally does, in fact, mean something. It means that if you say you "will literally die" if John and Sherlock don't kiss in the next episode, I expect you to stop breathing when John and Sherlock don't kiss in the next episode. (I do know that 'hyperbolic expression of strong emotion' is a valid alternate definition, but I can still be annoyed about that.)

"If you don't reblog this" is just common to horrifyingly glurgey Tumblr posts. I hate glurgey Tumblr posts.

Anything that relates to being a completely pedantic ass. I'm just crawling out of five years of living with Sole Rational Dude in a world of Silly Little Mentally Ill Women who Would Be So Smart if they Just Listened To Me, The Dude With The Penis.

But that's not really a WORD, per say, more just how someone speaks....

POC. If I called anyone black person I know a 'person of color' they would sideye me like crazy. They are not even particularly fond of "African American" because they are not from Africa nor are their ancestors.

POC is just colored person that people try to justify because IT'S PEOPLE FIRST! Also, stop lumping every non-white person together.

TBH and I'm probably going to catch heat for this but

"Oppressed/oppression

After being on tumblr and seeing anything and everything under the sun be called "oppression" and seeing abusive people defend their actions with some passive aggressive whine that anyone criticizing them is a big ole meanie that's "silencing the oppressed" I just can't help but roll my eyes when I see that word.

And that bothers me because I know there are people being actually oppressed. and at one time if I saw someone venting about being oppressed I probably would have believed and felt bad for them whereas now I can sometimes be cynical if there are no details given.

I'm still shocked enough when I see issues in the real world about people's plights but when I see someone claim to be oppressed on tumblr, there's just a bit of doubt.

I feel bad about that.

Nurturing/nurturer. It just means. Nothing. What the hell is it supposed to describe? How do you "nurture" something? Like, what are the specific acts involved in nurturing?

Problematic.

Privilege.

"Lets talk about this." <--This one is related to that stupid post about Princess Jasmine being trans. The author used this phrase and it just made the whole thing sound so self-important. As if she couldn't possibly be wrong and every idea that popped into her empty little head was worthy of discussion.
