Re: Words that don't mean anything anymore (to you)
"Oppressed/oppression
After being on tumblr and seeing anything and everything under the sun be called "oppression" and seeing abusive people defend their actions with some passive aggressive whine that anyone criticizing them is a big ole meanie that's "silencing the oppressed" I just can't help but roll my eyes when I see that word.
And that bothers me because I know there are people being actually oppressed. and at one time if I saw someone venting about being oppressed I probably would have believed and felt bad for them whereas now I can sometimes be cynical if there are no details given.
I'm still shocked enough when I see issues in the real world about people's plights but when I see someone claim to be oppressed on tumblr, there's just a bit of doubt.
I feel bad about that.

Honestly it's kind of sad, I just hope that instead of having to switch to another word , people learn to stop calling every difficult thing in life "oppression" or some variant of it.
When my dad won't let me leave the house in my uber short shorts, for example, that is an inconvenience . I am not being oppressed. If some dude on reddit tells me he can't take my diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome seriously that would be him being a dick, but it would not be actual oppression.
If I was arrested by the police for wearing the shorts that might be closer to oppression. If I was denied medical care because the government decided it no longer considered my disorder real THAT would be oppression.
I hope I don't seem like a jerk here.. I just feel like the current overuse of the word is cheapening it which is a shame because oppression is a very real thing.

Yeah that is true. I think people need to be reassured that they're allowed to complain and feel bad about little things. You can care about the little things and still care about the big things, just like you can care about one groups suffering and care about the issues of another group.
Maybe there would be less problems with some parts of the whole online Social Justice group if more people realized that.
