Flea dirt (which is basically flea poop) is black. If you comb your cat around his neck or right above the base of his tail and get hairs and little black grit, that's flea dirt. White flakes sounds like dry skin.

Frontline used to work awesome for us, but then the fleas got immune to it. Last time i had to use anything on the cats, I used Revolution.

You can also get a pill (from the vet) that they swallow/eat in food, that works for a month. It made my cat foam at the mouth and drool excessively, so we never used it again, but it worked great for the dog.

Don't bathe your cat unless you've done it before, it'll just end in tears. Flea collars are worthless and again, if your cat hasn't worn a collar before this, it'll drive the poor thing nuts. Do not, under any circumstances, use Hartz products.
