Fleas, and the pets that get them
(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:32 am (UTC)(link)As a treatment, I bought some Frontline anti-flea stuff (apparently the chemicals in Advantage are the same used in crop spraying, and since we're a big farming community, the fleas are mostly immune? I'm not sure how true it is, but I bought Frontline, just to be safe ._.;), and I put it on him. I thought also bought something called Sentry Home, and I've been vacuuming and spraying this stuff down like crazy, as it contains something in it that prevents fleas from developing when their in egg form, larvae form, or adult form.
So far, I haven't found anymore fleas, and I still can't tell if I'm coming out dander or eggs, but the amount of white flecks I'm pulling up when I comb him is lessening.
Does that sound like I'm doing the right thing? Also, how often do cat's scratch themselves? Because he's still scratching, but I'm not finding anymore fleas, and I don't know if that means I got them all and early enough to not have a huge problem, or if I'm just missing them while I'm combing.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)Would buying a flea collar be necessary if he's already been medicated? The stuff is supposed to last a month, and I have four months worth.

Note, though, BUY ONLY CAT FLEA SHAMPOO. Not dog. EVER. The chemical levels are different and dog flea shampoo can sometimes KILL cats.
Anyways, good luck. This reminds me, it's about time for all three of my cats to get their flea bath...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 12:56 am (UTC)(link)And yeah, I'll avoid the dog flea shampoo. D:
Thanks! Good luck with your cats!
Re: Fleas, and the pets that get them
I use water, which means the cats yell, screech, sometimes claw, and both of us wind up very soggy. I used to put them in the bathtub (lukewarm water, I run it to where it doesn't feel hot OR cold on my bare wrist), but found they put up less of a fight, for some reason, if I use my kitchen sink.
I usually just use a cup to wet them down with the faucet running, shampoo them up with one hand and use the other cup to rinse 'em off. And I go through lots of towels to get them "not sopping" and they take about a day to dry off, after which I brush them.
They get mad, but they all get kitty treats afterwards, so they deal. Some cats are better with water than others, too. Like, one of my cats - eh, she just mostly gives up and looks sad. Another sort of whines. And my youngest cat, she just goes PSYCHO. I always come away with battlemarks, lol.
Maybe I ought to look into powder. That might be less bloody, lol.

Frontline used to work awesome for us, but then the fleas got immune to it. Last time i had to use anything on the cats, I used Revolution.
You can also get a pill (from the vet) that they swallow/eat in food, that works for a month. It made my cat foam at the mouth and drool excessively, so we never used it again, but it worked great for the dog.
Don't bathe your cat unless you've done it before, it'll just end in tears. Flea collars are worthless and again, if your cat hasn't worn a collar before this, it'll drive the poor thing nuts. Do not, under any circumstances, use Hartz products.

Re: Fleas, and the pets that get them
I am inclined to say that if you've just applied the Frontline, don't bath him soon, it may wash the Frontline off.
Keep working on it how you have been, it sounds like you're doing the right thing.
