I wanted so much to like Orihime. The godmode fairy things were kind of neat at the beginning and I liked her ditzy weirdness. Really, all she had to do was save Ichigo from Ulquiorra, and I wouldn't have cared if she ever did anything again... One little "Hey, you can't kill the guy I like, I ERASE YOU NOW!" But noooo, it's far more plausible for the mostly-dead main guy to level up to Super Saiyan 27 while the girl with godmode powers sobs in the corner. T-T

Considering the shit she went through during that whole arc I can't blame her for the way she reacted. I can, however, blame Kubo for continuing to shove her off onto the sidelines.

I love Orihime so damn much and I hate how Kubo continually fucks her over. I thought during the Xcution arc that things would get better and they briefly did, but both she and Chad got shafted again.

You can't blame Kubo for continually writing Orihime as sobbing ineffectual mess while all the male characters are just fine? C'mon, Orihime isn't real. If Kubo wanted her to do something she would've done it.

IIRC Kubo admitted that he wrote himself in a corner when it came to Orihime and her powers. And she hasn't really been an sobbing mess since that arc. Ineffectual sure, but not really a sobbing mess. Unless that's changed since I dropped the manga after the Xcution arc.

Hasn't Kubo wrote himself into a corner as it pertains to just about everything? Yet Ichigo is on his 85th power-up and Orihime's doing... I don't know who cares.

I just don't know what to make of this new fandom trend of celebrating any and all female characters even the shittily written ones. What does it do? Who does it help? I think to really send a message of wanting better female characters you should stick to championing the well-written ones. I get that there's sometimes a fine line between criticizing a writer for saddling a female character with stereotypical flaws (cries too much, too sensitive, physically weak, whiny) and bashing a female character for having the audacity to be female, but dumping praise all over spottily-written-girl-in-a-shounen-manga-du-jour isn't a good solution.

Are you talking about in general or what? I legitimately like Orihime as a character and yes, she has been written terribly at times and I will gladly admit that. It doesn't stop me from liking her as a character.

I have no idea what the Bleach fandom is like these days but go to the Naruto fandom on Tumblr and marvel at the pages and pages of fanart pretending the women in that manga are totally Strong Independent Women Who Don't Need No Man instead of sloppily-written afterthoughts in Kishimoto's Naruto/Sasuke yaoi fanfic. It's... really something.

He gave her what may have been the best power of all... and yet how often has she actually used it? Especially when it'd count? I can so blame Kubo.
