Late to the party...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
~Finally~ hauled lazy my ass to watch Road to Eldorado, How to Train your Dragon and Brave, years after everyone.

What was the last "old" fandom(s) you got in after everyone has already left, FS?

Just based on a comment someone else left on a different thread ODF mine a few days ago, Life.

Firefly and Buffy. To some extent Doctor Who - I wouldn't say everyone had left, but the people I knew who were really into it at the time were way past it by then, or at the very least had settled into "casual fan" mode. Same with Mad Men, really.

It sucks because I have so many thoughts, and no one to really bounce off of.

Please bounce DW ideas off of me! I'm late in the sense I really like Season 3...and no one else does? I mean, the fic I like to read and write is a limited niche, and people stopped writing it about...eh...anywhere between 7 years ago to maybe...3 years ago?

da

You're not alone. I enjoyed series 3. In fact, that's what I watched first. Caught those eps on BBC America and was hooked

Inception and Firefly. ;_;

Harry Potter, sort of. I wasn't late to the fandom itself, I actually came in right before the fourth book, but I was a teenager/young twentysomething who couldn't write nearly as well as I thought I could. So now I have all of these more mature ideas I can actually write marginally well, except... well, the fandom pretty much packed up and left seven years ago, and the people who are still around are mostly into smut. Which isn't a criticism, people can write whatever the hell they want but that's not at all what I write, and most of my potential "audience" has moved on.

I don't know if it counts, but I spent over a year and a half plowing through 25+ years worth of DC comics continuity -- from Crisis on Infinite Earths to Flashpoint. I didn't actually finish until the New 52 was starting its 2nd year and all that old shit isn't even relevant anymore.

I kinda wanna do it again.

Merlin BBC. I got into it a year after the show ended and the fandom was still kind of active, but it is not a very friendly fandom (meaning fans don't seem to interact much no that the show is over), so I pretty much read up all the fic and that was it.

FMA. Caught Brotherhood on adult swim. Still haven't watched all of the first anime. I was one of those weird kids who would stay away from something if it got too popular, so I never read manga or watched anime when all my peers were obsessed. FMA opened my eyes to anime and the fact that it didn't all suck. The fandom was still active when I got involved, but not as active as during the first run.

Hah, I was avoiding coming in to say FMA because I'm starting to feel like it's all I talk about lately.

Feel free to talk about it with me all you want!

I need a FMA icon. I need lots of icons I don't have.

Lord of the Rings.
...and sort of Harry Potter now?

But they both have some scary fans so I'm more of an observer, really. Although I'd love to interact but I'm not SO knowledgeable of everything and most of them are, so I tend to back off most of the time.
I also don't get the hate between each of these fandoms have towards each other, like let it rest, people, they're both great books/films.

Firefly and Roswell. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out Roswell was still a pretty active fandom.

Roswell!!!! What community do you frequent? I've been trying to get around to rewatch episodes...

Oh it's been a while since I frequented a community. I got into Roswell in 2009 which was still years after it was canceled. I think it was a message board and the links are on my other computer.

I can always marathon season 1. Season 2 is depending and season 3, not so much.

Buffy. Which I watched last year for the first time.

I do this all the time. Most of my fandoms I got into late, though not always after people left. I guess Babylon 5 would be closest, though I'm really happy at how active the fandom actually is for a show that has been gone for so long.

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2014-06-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I didn't say Babylon 5, because the tumblr fandom for it is really great and we talk about it pretty much daily.

I seem to be pretty good at picking fairly active fandoms. The same thing happened with Buffy. I got into it years after the show was over, but the fandom is still fairly active.

Oh man, I only watched Road to El Dorado about a year ago, late high five! (And they aren't really fandoms of mine but I saw Lilo and Stitch for the first time a year ago and Monsters Inc this year. So late.)

As for the fandoms, maybe Reservoir Dogs? The struggle of being in fandoms for movies from the 90s.

Final Fantasy VII! (the original game)
I am enjoying the hell out of it, though, and probably won't be particularly active in the fandom because most of what I see is still devoted to fighting over whether Cloud/Aeris or Cloud/Tifa is the One True Pairing.

Re: Late to the party...

[personal profile] toku_mei 2014-06-22 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, how I wish original Final Fantasy VII was a fandom, without any Compilation at all! Since I don't like the spin-offs, I find it impossible to glance through the fandom without getting massively confused. Though fights over Cloud/Aeris vs Cloud/Tifa certainly sound like the fandom it used to be, pre-Compilation anyway... lol it will break my heart if the directors decide to make one of those ladies "canon", just break my heart I tell you. because everyone knows Barret is Cloud's one true love

I will be honest, I love Advent Children as crack (though I don't necessarily consider it really "canon" for the game). I basically ignore the others.

what I don't get is why people are so crazed to get a final answer. The whole point of having the option of choosing is that you can choose. This is great. They can ALL be the OTP, so why the drama??

Re: Late to the party...

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-22 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe Tiger and Bunny? No one was talking about it by the time I watched it. :/

Before that I read through all of The Authority (all the issues I could find, anyway. Which was most of it except for some crossovers) and same. There's next to no fandom and the little bit that exists is old.

And before that...god, I don't even know. Most things I watch while they're airing (or play as they are released, etc)...

Years ago (around the time of the movie release) I watched some of Starsky and Hutch and loved it, but had no one to talk about it with. It's being brought up more and more here at fs these days so that's awesome, but I need to rewatch and finish it. (I bought all the DVD's earlier this year.)
