Re: What immoral/illegal things are you guilty of doing?

I eat in the library all the time, even though we're not allowed. In my defense I never touch the books when I have food, just my own laptop, but I think it's really stupid that we're allowed to have drinks in there but not food. If I'm pulling a marathon research/study session, I need to eat, people. My bag of candy is not going to destroy a book any more than someone's coffee cup if it falls onto it somehow.

...Honestly as I get older I find I've stopped obeying most nonsensical, arbitrary rules. If it helps people/the business/social order, sure. If not, fuck it.

I like rules. They help me figure out what to do in situations. But I like them to make sense, yeah. The "drink but no food" seems ridiculous. Especially since a spilled soda on a computer is going to do way more damage than a spilled bag of Fritos.

Just don't get caught, that's my rule.

Lol even better, say you didn't know. 90% of the time all you get is a "well, don't do it again" if you go with that line. Being ignorant of the rules =/= intentionally flouting the rules, and it's not like they can prove you knew better. Being very polite and contrite seems to sell it every time.

As someone who used to work at the library, I'll explain why there is a no food policy.
Mice.

Libraries often have mice problems. People would leave their snacks behind and the cleaning crew who don't not always come in every day for deeps cleans but simply to empty out the trash cans would miss them. And then the mice would come. Unfortunately, when the mice could not find food they would nibble on the books. (Cooking books absorb food smells and up smelling like food.) That's why you will see with some libraries they will have cats on staff. (The smaller, more rural ones do this more than the bigger ones.) The cats handle the mice.

But ask your local library if they have ever had a mouse problem. You will be surprised by how often they do. Libraries are perfect places for mice. Quiet, locked down for all of the night and have plenty of places to hide.

Huh, I'd never thought of that. Thanks for the heads up.
