Let's all remember something here. The "big eyes" so prevalent in anime for the past few decades or so can be traced back to Osamu Tezuka, who first made the look popular in Japan. You know who he was most influenced by? Walt Disney. Therefore, it's kind of ridiculous to complain about it when the whole thing can be traced back to early Western animation in the first place.

Pretty much this.

I got a friend of mine into manga, and showed her some of Tezuka's work and she was surprised at how 'Disney' it was.

Yuss. It makes me happy to see people bursting the bubble of American exceptionalism.

Yeah, as someone who reads both I can point out big differences between the two (the largest being pacing/movement styles) but people always focus on the damn eyes when big eyes are just expressive and useful.

Disney and Betty Boop, yeah.

...And? Unless you're claiming that neither western art nor Anime has changed since then [and we're talking over 50 years ago now] that means jack in terms of how they're the same.

Also, last time I checked, "big eyes" wasn't the only thing different about anime nor the only thing people didn't like about it. [And this is before we even get to the fact that not all animation in either genre looks the same to start with.]

Actually "big eyes" is often one of the main complaints.

Obviously, there are other differences, but they don't generally get discussed.
