the kid on the left looks tired and/or high as a kite, and the one on the right looks like he's seen some pretty horrible shit.

The kid on the left has a pretty remarkable resemblance to Jim Breuer tbh

My 50 year old mother who only watches shows on European royalty and House Hunters can tell the difference between anime and cartoon drawing styles.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like this comment for some reason. Possibly the way it makes my brain leap to a show about house hunting for European royalty.

Ironic comment given secret #12.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
There's definitely been some convergence between the two styles recently, but they're still distinct enough to tell the difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i disagree

part of why i don't watch anime anymore is because something about the particular style of (mainstream, anyway) japanese animation bugs me. and it isn't just because of the eyes.

and slightly off topic, but unpopular opinion. i think the way the new sailor moon anime is colored is hideous. i don't care about the way it's drawn itself, but the colors and shading looks like shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
agreed on both parts.

The coloring is pretty bad. Especially the coloring on Usagi's hair. Way too bright

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's an unpopular opinion. I don't agree with it (I like the colors but nothing else), but I've seen many other people say it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think when coloring went digital the palettes became a lot more bright for both cartoons and anime, I definitely miss the more muted and earthy colors of pre-digital.

Her hair isn't any brighter than it was back in the last season of the original series. I'd say it's pretty damn close, actually, if you can find a slightly cleaner version of the season.

The colors look nice and fun and fit, imo.

+1 on the first one. The colouring in SMC doesn't bug me so much, I'm very much happy that all the red bits on her outfit are finally pink tinted, but dear god is the art style absolutely atrocious.

as a webcomic artist I get "accused" of drawing anime style sometimes-- I guess my style looks anime-esque because the characters eyes are just a line with a circle under it? idk-- and some of the vitriol people come up with is a little weird. So what if it looks like anime? It just looks cartoony to me.

[personal profile] tasogare_n_hime 2014-06-21 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not even remotely true. You can't even say all western animation looks the same, or that all anime look the same.

Let's all remember something here. The "big eyes" so prevalent in anime for the past few decades or so can be traced back to Osamu Tezuka, who first made the look popular in Japan. You know who he was most influenced by? Walt Disney. Therefore, it's kind of ridiculous to complain about it when the whole thing can be traced back to early Western animation in the first place.

How about we all agree not to be racist fucks who homogenize vast swathes of artistic styles based on their geographic and ethnic region of origin?

lol, I love this secret. On topic: Western animation often has-
a coloured contour VS the black one in anime,
chins VS chins, what chins?,
neck/shoulder muscles VS neck tendons
shadows and highlights that are not in sharp contrast
and finally differently animated movement.

This is what first comes to mind.

I think I get what you mean. People sometimes complain that anime features are too exaggerated ("If real people's eyes were that big, they'd look freaky!"), and that anatomy is really wonky... while simultaneously ignoring that western cartoon eyes are ALSO huge, and character designs are greatly exaggerated too. Anime is a cartoon at the end of the day, so if some character's waist is smaller than the eyes, who gives a shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-21 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a difference, but it all stems from the same stuff in the past so I guess I can see your point?

I think I agree in that one type of stylization isn't automatically better for any objective reason. Anime stylization just generally went in a slightly different direction than Western cartoons, and it really comes down to personal preference.

In Understanding Comics Scott McCloud actually brings up some very interesting points about storytelling differences between comics and manga, and some of the influences that have sneaked in. Really, the influences go back and forth so idk what there is to be snobbish about.

On the other hand, I can agree with people that don't like the current trend for excessively moe style in anime these days. I don't like it either. But pretending that's all anime/manga is is just ignorant.

I thought people were mainly complaining about the big boom in popularity of anime styles (that really started to appear in the late 90s-early 2000s), as in its prevalence. Guess I was wrong.

Are you really saying there's no significant stylistic difference between anime and cartoon?

They have a lot of differences. Both have their pro and cons, though.
