so did you stop watching glee halfway through season 2, or something?

I stopped watching after Rachel's pregnancy scare in college and I still don't understand how anyone thought this relationship was anything but toxic.

Nope, Karofsky was redeemed, but that doesn't mean the original ship wasn't basically based on bullying and assault. And that's actually exactly what a lot of shippers got off on.

You're basing this off of what, some of the fanfiction that was written? Most of the people who actually wanted Kurt and Karofsky to become a couple only wanted them to get together after Karofsky dealt with his problems.

That's just blatantly not true, I was quite active in that fandom at the time and the Kurtofsky ship positively exploded right after the kiss, which was waaay before he got his shit together. Now, obviously I do not have concrete data on how many people that was percentually, but I'd say it was the second most popular slash ship after Klaine.

I'm not saying people can't ship it (before or after) - and hell, I actually LIKE Karofsky because I really did like how they ended up handling it.

I'm just saying you can't blame people for criticizing the ship based on how it started and on those fans who were romanticizing something that was bullying in a pretty harsh form (no matter the motivation).

Yes, the ship started after the kiss. But that doesn't mean the shippers actually wanted them to get together while Karofsky was still bullying Kurt, or that they thought the bullying was okay. They wanted Karofsky to overcome his self-loathing, redeem himself, and earn Kurt's forgiveness first.

That's precisely right. It was a forgiveness/redemption arc and full of great dramatic potential. No one I knew romanticized the bullying.
