Because Nymeria couldn't be found, they punished Lady instead even though she was innocent.

But it's not the same thing at all. Drogon killed that kid because that's what dragons do, and he will do it again, and so will the others, unless they are controlled, and this is the only way Dany knows how.

how do we know what the other dragons will do? drogon's the only one dany's had trouble controlling.

Because they are predatory carnivores with the intelligence of a dog.

How do we know? From the history of what the characters said. Dragons burn everything in sight. That's why they were slaughtered. They were out of control and far too dangerous for anyone.

didn't the dragons just become smaller and die out?

(Insert mandatory "I'm no expert, haven't read the books, only the wikis" statement here.)

I got an impression the Targaryens started keeping their dragons held inside enclosures, which contributed to them not growing as big as previous generations. So the lifestyle forced on them by their keepers contributed to them becoming smaller and dying out.

That's not true at all.

They were owned and ridden for centuries. Daenerys' ancestors conquered Westeros with three dragons, and their descendants had more after them.

A civil war pitted dragon against dragon, but it's understood that they were wiped out because one family member (Aegon III Targaryen), distraught over seeing his mother fed to his uncle's dragon during said war, sought to wipe them out. He had a dragon of his own, once. And he tried to hatch eggs after that, too, apparently regretting his actions.

It's worth noting that the maesters of the citadel are also believed to be responsible for the decline of dragons.

okay, did Drogon kill the kid? because i was left with the impression that is was a set-up by... *forgets who*

that is wasn't the dragon's doing. but a plot against Dany.

In the books, Drogon kills the little girl for certain - it's not a plot by the Harpy or whatever.
