Re: Things you feel like you should feel worse about, but don't?

The recent flood of legal immigrant children crossing the border.

I should feel bad for them because they are crossing such harsh conditions alone. And if their numbers were small like in the hundreds, I would be, "Oh, let them stay. We have room." But since last Winter close to 80,000 children have crossed illegally. That's right, eighty thousand. That's like a healthy town appearing overnight where no one know who the hell these people are.

What's even more, the children are being sent by their parents on a rumor that is spreading like wild fire in Central and South America that if they send their children alone ahead of them, the US government will let the children stay and later on will let their parents follow. No paper work. No read tape. Just send your kids over and you can join them.

Even more, US officials have been trying to work out with leaders from the countries these people are exodusing from and those leaders are making a mockery of the US. Like Biden was supposed to meet with the president of Honduras. But the president canceled on Biden. Why? Because he was too busy watching The World Cup. What?

Too many people being sent on a false rumor that is probably being spread around by the governments themselves. (What a great way to get rid of your poorest of the poor than to shove them across to the US.) Screw that noise. Send the kids back.

I remember watching a documentary on this and having similar feelings... what are their governments doing to let their kids stay? One boy was running from his abusive stepfather... I'm not saying our system is always the best at dealing with that either, but holy shit, was there really not one legal official he could've turned to first? I believe in helping immigrants who have to find refuge, but it seems to me their own governments don't want to do much to help them, and that's also a problem.

Don't you know that it is America's responsibility to fix every problem in the world?

There are things we can do to resolve this. We could build a wall to keep people from illegally immigrating. We could send those kids home to where they belong. We could lay down some economic sanctions on countries that treat us like crap.

But we won't do any of that.

Actually, the wall idea is a very bad one for multiple reasons (including the fact you'd be cutting off part of the US due to agreements made with Mexico with regards to certain types of buildings along the border iirc).

That aside, yeah. I do agree with your point, sadly.

Honestly, I agree that they should be sent back (if nothing else than because it's probably one of the only ways to fight the rumor if their governments are the ones spreading it.

I mean, I do feel bad for the kids, but at the same time? Not bad enough to be willing to let that many stay. (Of course I'm from a border state so that might be influencing my feelings as well.)

I live in Arizona and one of the places kids are being kept is Nogales. This has been all over the local news to such an extent that I'm tired of hearing about it.

I live in Texas (Brownsville is another of the places the kids are being kept) and I'm a little tired of the constant "Border agents are overwhelmed by kids!" news too.

I grew up not far from Nogales. Sierra Vista, actually. Lots of back and forth about the issue there.
