Those people wouldn't be able to feed their kids properly anyway. Adding meat doesn't make this diet better. McDonald's and fried chicken isn't going to help those kids.

... unless one of the problems is a lack of protein, in which case burgers and fried chicken aren't the healthiest sources of protein, but they're still protein.

Since we're talking in pure hypotheticals here, this isn't even a helpful scenario. Most Westerners (at least Americans) actually OVEREAT meat, so there's that. I am very comfortable going out on a limb here and suggesting that people who maintain long term vegetarian diets are probably more likely to pick healthier choices (including alternative protein sources) than the average omnivore.

NO ONE in any developed nation getting three squares a day is lacking in protein. You'd literally have to be starving to death.

Do you even know how much protein is recommended per day? Have you checked a nutritional label recently?
