Re: When authors reply to reviews...

If it's a nice reply, I feel happy a) that I obviously got the comment right and b) that the author of a goodfic is prepared to speak to me. (hello social anxiety.) But I do expect a reply, sorta; if I don't get one I alternate between wondering if the author is still around and OK, and wondering if she's a grump, in which case, why put the fic up where a reply is even possible?

/could be overthinking this.

Definitely over thinking. You have no idea why someone's not responding, and leaping to "grump" is a little ballsy. Also just because you can't fathom why somebody would put a fic up if they don't want to respond to replies (if they actually don't and aren't just busy) doesnt mean reasons don't exist.

In short, you don't live in people's heads, so stop pretending to.

ayrt: leaping to "grump" is a little ballsy

As I said, I alternate between wondering if the author is around and OK, and wondering if she's grumpy. It'd make sense to me, if an author didn't want comments, if she disabled them - or put the fics up somewhere where commenting is impossible.

I get what people are saying about being suddenly busy, though.

As often as not, when I don't reply, it's because either I don't get the alert or I had to archive it/set it aside due to time, and then by the time I notice or remember the comments, it's been so long I feel like it would be incredibly awkward to answer.

It's weird that you have social anxiety but you don't seem to have a concept that the authors might have it?

Depending on the time of year, it might take me three months or more to respond to comments. It's not that I'm deliberately ignoring them. I have a job that gets crazy-busy a few times a year and I just don't have the wherewithal to craft a decent reply. And now I feel guilty for taking too long.
