When authors reply to reviews...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Assuming it's a nice reply, do you like it, or does it make you feel weird or self-conscious? Do people even expect a reply when they leave reviews?

Re: When authors reply to reviews...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's a nice reply, I feel happy a) that I obviously got the comment right and b) that the author of a goodfic is prepared to speak to me. (hello social anxiety.) But I do expect a reply, sorta; if I don't get one I alternate between wondering if the author is still around and OK, and wondering if she's a grump, in which case, why put the fic up where a reply is even possible?

/could be overthinking this.

Definitely over thinking. You have no idea why someone's not responding, and leaping to "grump" is a little ballsy. Also just because you can't fathom why somebody would put a fic up if they don't want to respond to replies (if they actually don't and aren't just busy) doesnt mean reasons don't exist.

In short, you don't live in people's heads, so stop pretending to.

ayrt: leaping to "grump" is a little ballsy

As I said, I alternate between wondering if the author is around and OK, and wondering if she's grumpy. It'd make sense to me, if an author didn't want comments, if she disabled them - or put the fics up somewhere where commenting is impossible.

I get what people are saying about being suddenly busy, though.

As often as not, when I don't reply, it's because either I don't get the alert or I had to archive it/set it aside due to time, and then by the time I notice or remember the comments, it's been so long I feel like it would be incredibly awkward to answer.

It's weird that you have social anxiety but you don't seem to have a concept that the authors might have it?

Depending on the time of year, it might take me three months or more to respond to comments. It's not that I'm deliberately ignoring them. I have a job that gets crazy-busy a few times a year and I just don't have the wherewithal to craft a decent reply. And now I feel guilty for taking too long.

Yes, I like it. But the LJ fic comms I came from made it pretty expected. People that didn't respond to comments usually got side-eyed. I don't expect replies, but I think more highly of people that send some kind of acknowledgement.

Yeah, same. But I've also been on fic archives, and replying wasn't expected, though it was nice to get a shout out in the next chapter.

I like it, but I don't expect it. I know plenty of authors don't reply to comments for various reasons and that's fine.

I like it. When they don't (especially if they do reply to others) I feel like I said something wrong.

I like it, and I always think an author is so sweet for replying to reviews

I don't think they're a dick or anything if they don't reply, I just assume they don't know what to say or are too busy, etc. It's always nice to be acknowledged though, and I like knowing they saw and enjoyed the comment.

Either way is cool, though. *shrugs*

I like it. Honestly, if I know they'll reply to me, I try to leave a longer review and give them more critique. I'll also consistently review their story.

I at least say 'thank you' to every comment I get, except for ones which make no sense (one today was simply a question mark, and I didn't get it, and didn't want to take the time write an entire question out as to what did the commenter mean by just posting a question mark?).

If I get more of a comment than, "This is great! I love it!", then I'll generally give a more in-depth response. I figure, you take the time to comment, the least I can do is respond.

I like it; it makes it seem like they appreciate the review.

Up until recently, I expected them. I like responses no matter what, but I also know I'm pretty much a minority in the extent of that sentiment.

I don't expect a reply at all but I like it when I get one, even if it's just a simple 'thank you'.

I don't care. If they wrote and shared a great fanfic, that's more than enough satisfaction for me. I just assume they saw my comment and were happy with it.

Re: When authors reply to reviews...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
The first few times I left comments to fics, I apparently picked a couple by authors who were used to only getting comments from their friends. So, while my comments were basically along the lines of "This is a great story! I liked X, Y and Z in particular," the authors' replies would be weirdly curt and different from the replies they'd leave to other people's comments, which would range from pure gushing to major constructive criticism. I'm probably reading too much into it, but I keep stumbling into fandom spaces where, despite public accessibility, people really regard it as their private party and aren't very open to newcomers and it makes me self-conscious.

Were you on LJ? It could get like that sometimes there, especially with people who use their journals both as a blog and a fic repository. I doubt they mean to be rude and unwelcoming, it's just much easier to find things to talk about with people you converse with day in, day out, than someone you'd just met.

I don't like it, which is why I don't tend to leave reviews. I'm also really glad no one's left anything but kudos on any of my fics, since I wouldn't know how to respond to it, and I would feel anyone who left a review of any significant length would deserve a response. That's due to being a ball of anxiety issues, though.

I'm hoping if people ever review any of my stuff they won't expect a reply, since I doubt I'll be able to give them one unless I already talk to them on AIM, in which case they'll probably just talk to me directly anyway.

I like it! I definitely don't expect them though, so when I do get a reply, it's a nice surprise. I occasionally write fic myself, so I always try to reply to reviews/comments when I get them.

Re: When authors reply to reviews...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I rarely write reviews because I rarely have anything to say other than "I enjoyed that". As an author, I'll answer questions, and I'll respond to more detailed observations or criticism... but I'd feel VERY weird posting individual "thanks" to everyone who said "I enjoyed that" to me. Usually have a "thanks for reading" of some kind in the author's note and just hope that covers it.
