Re: When authors reply to reviews...

The first few times I left comments to fics, I apparently picked a couple by authors who were used to only getting comments from their friends. So, while my comments were basically along the lines of "This is a great story! I liked X, Y and Z in particular," the authors' replies would be weirdly curt and different from the replies they'd leave to other people's comments, which would range from pure gushing to major constructive criticism. I'm probably reading too much into it, but I keep stumbling into fandom spaces where, despite public accessibility, people really regard it as their private party and aren't very open to newcomers and it makes me self-conscious.

Were you on LJ? It could get like that sometimes there, especially with people who use their journals both as a blog and a fic repository. I doubt they mean to be rude and unwelcoming, it's just much easier to find things to talk about with people you converse with day in, day out, than someone you'd just met.
