Re: Why did I read that?? (tw: multiple ick factors) tw rape, incestuous rape

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. The initial publicity material was so alluring, and for a Tolkien fan, so was the prospect of another epic trilogy. Fantasy was my escape, somewhere with clearly defined good and evil, and where good would triumph. Surprise!rapist!protag was not what I was expecting.

Deerskin, by Robin McKinley. She was another author I enjoyed until I encountered the incestuous rape.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons why I enjoy fanfic - that sort of stuff is warned for.

Every time anyone tells me I need to read Thomas Covenant, I want to slap them upside the head with the book.

Deerskin followed the original storyline well enough that the incestuous rape - while sickening - didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the story. However, it took many, many re-reads to figure out exactly what McKinley was trying to say with the ending.

My friends and I started a book club and unfortunately Thomas Covenant was one of the first books we started, due to positive reviews online. We had no warning. Fuck that book and fuck everyone who recommended it.

Yeah, I bailed on the first Thomas Covenant book pretty fast.
