The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore (SERIOUS ick)

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-06-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So many critics loved this book, and I don't really get why. Setting aside the lesbian toe sex and the girl-on-chimp action and the chimp raping a frog to death*, it's a story that really focuses in on the ideas and beliefs of one annoying, pompous guy. It occasionally makes token efforts to discuss his effects on the people around him, but the women in particular are mainly discussed in terms of how his effects on them in turn affect him. Despite its stabs at multidimensional supporting characters, the only character who didn't feel flat to me was Bruno, and I just didn't LIKE him.

* This is supposed to be a moment with deep moral and philosophical implications, showing how the protagonist differs from his father (the frog rapist), how he differs from the people watching, and why the people watching will never understand him. It's a chimp raping a frog to death. Ew.
