There is some idiot on a FB page I go on talking about how she thinks vaccinations cause autism, can cause cancer, and are FORCED on children. Anti-vaccers are the worst.

They're the worst. It's so strange that in less than two generations, we've managed to forget just how horrible childhood illnesses are. The sheer number of children that died horrible deaths, or suffered injuries that they had/have to deal with for the rest of their lives because of preventable diseases should have left a larger imprint on the historical landscape, and yet...

Give your damn kids shots, damnit.

This belief used to be in the far, far fringes. Now, it's almost common place. How can they ignore science like that?

Because of a moron with a pretty face.

To be fair, it's not as simple as 'ignoring science'...when it comes to medicines, there's a lot of 'science' and 'studies' and '9/10 reputable doctors' that is flat out lies paid for by the big pharmaceutical companies. It is silly to generalize that to a distrust of all medicines and vaccines, but I feel like it's not a bad idea to have a sense of skepticism.

If skepticism leads you to anti-vaccination opinions, you're (a general "you", not you specifically) doing it really, really wrong. It's not enough or even useful to doubt everything just 'cause you think it's helpful. Uninformed skepticism is only slightly less damaging than uninformed belief.

"Uninformed skepticism is only slightly less damaging than uninformed belief." Truth, especially in the realm of science and medicine.

There's a reason we haven't had a vast swath of deaths from old diseases - skepticism is bringing those deaths back.

They are, and I don't believe in Hell, but I still think they should have a special part of it reserved for them.

In the mean time, I live and work in a country where millions of families don't even have access to vaccination for their kids despite fervently wanting it :\

This is the sort of insane stupidity that made me sick for over half a hear because - despite having all my boosters - I caught whooping cough. Seriously, in this day and age there is ZERO REASON why there should be a freaking whooping cough epidemic.

I still thank my lucky stars that they finally diagnosed the fucking thing (after my doctor told my mother he thought I was malingering while I was RIGHT THERE but he'd do a blood test 'just in case') two days before I'd have met a friend's non-vaccinated baby.

The weird thing is, even after she found out that only serendipity prevented her infant from being in contact with something potentially LETHAL, she stuck to her opinion.
