There is some idiot on a FB page I go on talking about how she thinks vaccinations cause autism, can cause cancer, and are FORCED on children. Anti-vaccers are the worst.

They're the worst. It's so strange that in less than two generations, we've managed to forget just how horrible childhood illnesses are. The sheer number of children that died horrible deaths, or suffered injuries that they had/have to deal with for the rest of their lives because of preventable diseases should have left a larger imprint on the historical landscape, and yet...

Give your damn kids shots, damnit.

That my chronic pain is all in my head. Actually had a nurse at my work's Occupational Health department ask me once if maybe I thought it was psychological.

Yes, being so sensitive that brushing against something can sometimes give me bruises, someone smacking my arm or back playfully feels like being punched, or even just staying in one position to long causes pain when I try and move is all in my head.

That people who can't drink a lot are just wimps. My alcohol tolerance is really low and I know that I can't drink 4 cans of beer like everyone else, I am just not physiologically built for that. My friends tease me good-naturedly about it and I'm totally cool with that but sometimes I'll stumble upon an asshole who will legitimately think that they're superior just because they can drink more and I'm just like ಠ_ಠ

Anything that plays into the Supercrip stereotype. Or unsolicited herbs/faith healing/brand new equipment "THAT WILL CURE YOOOOOU 5EVA" advice.

Mind you. I no longer go ballistic. I just quietly smile at them and stew, and imagine their heads exploding like the dude's at the end of the movie Scanners. Much more cathartic, that.

People falling for hoaxes and urban legends. IDk why it's such a peeve for me, but it makes me really mad. It's not that hard to figure out that a story without a source, vague progression, with characters who're given only a first name, shitty spelling, and worse, maaaaay not be the most reliable thing.

I ran into this one today: http://mech-bull.tumblr.com/post/89626297718/louie-key-myinterpretation5-thethneedler. The first three words tell you it's unreliable. ffs people.

Also, the Frozen hatedom still not letting go.

People (my doctor and therapist especially) constantly telling me to stop drinking coffee. No, doing that isn't going to help my anxiety and sleep problems. I'm intelligent and aware enough of my own body to come to that conclusion on my own. Coffee helps my body feel good and helps me focus and function throughout the day; my life was a lot worse when I wasn't drinking it. And my messed up internal clock and anxiety issues won't be magically alleviated if I stop drinking it.

That I can somehow magically stop being shy or quiet around new people, and the fact that I can't means I'm just not trying hard enough. Also. Pointing it out? Only makes it worse.(I'm well aware of how much of an awkward fuck I am, telling me is going to do jack shit, especially when I already feel like the entire room is staring at me).

Tinhats/ conspiracy theorists. UHG. It really pisses me off for some reason when people don't just take things as they are and have to come up with alternate theories for things, or making up their own explanations they claim as true for things they don't understand.

Thinking you can make yourself sound better by adding odd words and phrases into conversation. I have that sort of stuff done to me all the time and it is so aggravating.

Affecting colloqialisms from other places. You're from the North East United States, you sound stupid saying words like "Head" "Mate" "Taters" (super exaggerated taaaayyy-tERs). By stealing words from the South, British English and Australian English you only come across as trying WAY too hard to be cool. That little pause while you wait for someone to ask what "Head" or "Watercloset" mean when you say you're going to look for one as you get up from the table at a restaurant is also very obvious.

Likewise making up your own words for things. It's the internet. Stop calling it the interconnect. Especially with that stupid little grin like you're waiting for a fond laugh track.

Also excessive use of jargon; very job specific jargon so everyone has to ask you what the words and random series of numbers and code names mean every other sentence. You don't sound intelligent, you sound like an ass trying to sound intelligent.

And just using "big" words incorrectly.

The conflation of questioning authority with blindly rejecting it. Having critical thinking skills is important, but knee-jerk rejection of anything that smacks of The Man is the opposite of that. No, the government didn't orchestrate Sandy Hook. No, vaccines aren't going to give your children autism. No, coffee enemas will not cure cancer, not even if you do it 'til it starts dribbling out your ears.

Re: What grinds your gears?

If you concede that two friends' relationship can be easily interpreted in a slashy way, you MUST ship it. The only reason not to ship two BFFs is because you are tragically incapable of realizing how slashy they are, not because you are more interested in friendships, or because you are just not interested in shipping. No, of ~course~ not. Why would ~anyone~ ever find any platonic relationship equally or more appealing than a romantic one if the romantic one is at all possible? Romance trumps all! It really grinds my gears when people treat non-romantic relationships as "incomplete" and shit.

Also, on the flip side, the idea that slashing two characters who barely interact at all because you like their *potential* dynamic is "dumb" and "nonsensical". Uh...why not? What's so wrong with that? In canon, sometimes two characters in a large cast will start out barely interacting, but then become very shippy once they finally do get put in a situation interact. So what's wrong with doing the same thing in fanfic? But everyone seems to sneeringly dismiss these "what if?" slash ships as white cock syndrome, which grinds my gears because I find it incredibly closed-minded. (Technically, this counts for het shipping too, but I usually only see it in slash.)

Black and white, absolutist thinking about pretty much anything.

People cussing out other people for liking things they didn't like. *Glares at Thomas Covenant commenters upthread*

People who think that being offended means they have the right to order other people around and be obeyed without question.

1. People who dismiss canon because it wasn't presented in a way that was convincing to *them*.

Yeah, I know some pairings are hard to swallow. But if someone gets called a "boyfriend" in a non-joking, non-ironic, unmistakable manner, then it's a fucking boyfriend. I don't care if girlfriend/other boyfriend didn't shout their love from the rooftops, they wouldn't mention it in canon like that if it wasn't so. Even if you don't find it convincing.

2. Entitled special snowflakes. Especially ones who have zero incentive to try at life, and expect a fucking prize just because they bothered to show up somewhere. Oh, but they wouldn't dream of doing B to get to A, because B is totally beneath them and you should be handing them A because they claim they can handle it.

3. People who only stick around a fandom to shit all over it. Not even in a trolling sense. And I don't mean reasonable criticism. They just have so much hatred for a series that they have to tell everybody and their grandmother, every hour of every day, how godawful and horrible it is, and they won't rest until everyone knows what a brainsucking shithole of a fandom they've wasted precious hours pouring love into. Goddamn, just go away and start your own hate shrine. Nobody enjoys hearing something they love get repeatedly shit on for no reason.

"I'm sorry you're upset" is a non-apology.

Because it's not. I can feel sorry that you're upset, because I know how it feels to be upset, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I said anything wildly out of line that needs apologizing for, and I won't apologize just for having an opinion that differs from yours.

Granted, sometimes things are said that need apologizing for, but a lot of the time I feel like people expect an unreasonable amount of groveling whenever they feel slighted.

Friends who remind me (loudly!) that I have a boyfriend when we're going out together. Yes, I know I have a relationship. No, that doesn't mean I am going to stop going dancing. I like dancing, he doesn't, ergo, I dance with other people. I like nightlife, he doesn't. So no, I don't see anything wrong with going out with the girls and no, that doesn't mean I'll not have a playful flirt if I want.

He has the same sort of thing with other activities (martial arts, yoga, hiking trips)and the same freedom to flirt with / look at / be attractive in the presence of anybody he wants. When I tried to explain this to them, they kept insisting that that's DIFFERENT but not being able to satisfactorily explain why.

I mean, obviously, if I was leading somebody on that'd be a problem. If somebody tries to ask me out, or makes any sort of serious mood I do let them know clearly that I'm not available. But what the FUCK is wrong with someone in a relationship having fun for once withOUT their significant other?
