S.L. Viehl's 'Stardoc' has one of the worst "romances" I've ever read (rape, general creepiness). I liked the concept for the book a lot and some of the medical stuff, but a lot of it was unrealized too. :/

Oh, and 'My Name is Memory' by Ann Brashares because the ending was so abrupt and unsatisfying. It was alright up to that point, but the last couple pages tipped it into the 'do not recommend' category. (Several years later and I'm still annoyed by the ending.)
