I accidentally killed a pet once when I was little. It was a guinea pig and I just squeezed him too hard. I had terrible guilt over it for years, but that didn't make him less dead of course.

Kids do that a lot. Worse, sometimes they try to cover it up.

An older cousin of mine, when she was a baby, sat on a parrot and killed it. She tried to claim that the parrot committed suicide. Years later her mother wrote the story down as part of a booklet of 'funny stories' she gave out for her daughter's wedding.

I know it happens, I just feel maybe my parents shouldn't have let me have pets until a bit later. really did feel very bad about it for years.

... little kids know what suicide is? Or do you mean a kid version of suicide?

I knew what suicide was since I was young enough to think the word was "sewer side" and assume it was so-called because jumping into the sewer was one way to kill yourself.

Kids kill their pets a lot? Geez, I hope not. Kids really shouldn't be around pets without adult supervision. I don't blame any little kid that accidentally kills their pet just because they don't understand not to squeeze to hard, etc, but it's still animal abuse, and adults need to take charge and reduce any change of accident. Particularly by teaching kids appropriate ways to interact with animals.

Ugh, I hate how common it is for people to think dead animal stories are funny. Different people at work used to tell them casually at luncheons when someone would mention their pet, especially if it was a more unusual pet than a cat or dog. "You have a gerbil? Heh, my daughter had a gerbil once, and [cue story about gerbil dying a ~hilariously wacky~ accidental death]"

This! I feel sick when people say things like that. Let alone the sickos who do it on purpose.

I'm sorry, I can imagine how guilty you must have felt. This is why little kids really shouldn't be around pets without supervision, even "safe" pets. Parents need to supervise. Accidents can always happen, of course, but kids are impulsive and have trouble understanding consequences, and how fragile pets are.

Oh my gosh, anon, I feel so bad for you and your ex-guinea pig. ): The guinea pig didn't deserve it and you just made an easy childhood mistake (I mean, kids are so used to handling plush toys) and I can just imagine how much it must have hurt to not only lose a pet but also feel responsible for it. That is some heavy, heavy shit for a child to have to deal with.
