Spirited Waters. Fucking Spirited Waters.

I will never stop ranting about this book okay. Never.

Copying and pasting from when I ranted about it on tumblr:

-----

K, so, the book I’m reading is… Interesting.

Like, I picked it up because it was about kayaking the inside passage, something I am actually highly interested in.
But it’s kind of awkward reading? Like, I feel like it’s not just a book about a woman solo kayaking the inside passage but about a WOMAN solo kayaking the inside package.

Which would be great, if she talked about some of the legit. issues that women might face! Like, how do you deal with pms-ing when there’s bears and wolves about?

But no.

Instead it’s got really weird descriptors like hummingbirds as “red as period blood”. Yes. Thank you. That’s REALLY what I want to be thinking about when I see a humminbird; my fucking period.

And then, like, she did something to her knife so it looks like labia, and I’m just like ??? why??? Do you get some ~magical ~woman ~power because of it?

Like, I just cannot comprehend putting genitals on your knife, ‘kay? A knife made to look like a dick would get just as much confusion out of me (unless it was played for laughs. This author, however, is completely serious.)

AND THEN she’s fishing, and comes upon a sea urchin, and is gonna eat it, but then she compares the opening of the sea urchin to vagina dentata??????
???????????????????????????????????????????????

AND THEN

she keeps randomly bringing up spiritual information from the various tribes she knows about along the Pacific Northwest, and then practicing different spiritual components from each of them?

Like, she looks at the Eagle, and she says “this tribe believes this of the eagle” and then she prays to the eagle using that tribe’s belief system? Which wouldn’t weird me out so much if she wasn’t constantly picking up things from a ton of different cultures? Like, one minute she’ll mention one culture, and then another, she’ll mention another, and she keeps doing things from all the various cultures, and I just kind of side-eyeing her because you can’t just pick and choose things from a ton of different cultures, and do it to be ~closer ~to ~Earth.

IDK, I’m NOT actually Native, so maybe actual Native persons might think I’m overreacting, but it’s something I’ve noticed.

-----

Also, every man in that book wanted to rape her. Apparently.

This was already on my "read it to believe it" list. Is there a paragraph that doesn't have something to do with genitals?

There are some. Personally, I didn't think that they made up for the weird bits, but YMMV.
