Re: Fears you have if your work became a fandom

I think probably it would be fandom's tendency to oversimplify things. Like, in a novel I'm writing, the protagonist is caught between two love interests. It's not meant to be a love triangle and it won't be, but I feel like fandom would turn it into one, complete with "Team X/Y", even though in many ways that would run counter to many themes of the work.

Conversely, while I aim for a lot of diversifying representation (race, sex, gender, orientation, etc.), I have the dichotomy of fears: on one hand, I'd fear SJWs taking over the fandom and getting too hung up on social-justice related issues to let people just enjoy themselves. On the other hand, I also fear that, if it ever got turned into a movie, the whitewashing/manwashing/etc. in terms of casting would be horrific.

(Ironically, I've had more than one friend assure me the fact that my book's cast is so diverse means I'll never have to worry about someone trying to turn it into a movie, go figure.)

Me too really. Also it doesn't help that there's a part of my brain that finds ways to twist ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING as "problematic" or implying some unfortunate implication. Shit's annoying as hell, it's like I can't escape tumblr even in my mind.
