I'm a liberal who doesn't think capitalism is the epitome of evil and has no problem with people praying in school or government spaces, so long as no one else is being forced to do the same.

This is seen as a huge contradiction to some of my liberal friends.

I'm super liberal and I feel the same way.

I don't have a problem with people praying in school/gov't spaces on their own time, but not as an organized official event, and certainly not in a way that takes up other people's time. I don't think most liberals would have a problem with someone saying a quick prayer to themselves before a test or between classes, but if the teacher says "okay, down on your knees, it's praying time" that's where the problem comes in.

This is how I feel about it as well.

The first one is not at all a contradiction with liberalism. It would be a contradiction with a lot of leftist ideologies, but it's not really what liberalism is about. Arguably that's one of its defining characteristics historically.

I've never met a liberal who has any problem with private individuals praying in schools or government spaces on their own time, silently or aloud, as long as they are not disrupting the legitimate functions of the space or imposing themselves on others. What people tend to have a problem with is when there is the appearance of a government endorsement of religion and/or a captive audience is pressured into participating in the prayer (even when they technically have the right to abstain, doing so still makes an individual stand out from the group in a negative and exclusionary way).
