In small talk with people I'll very likely never see again I lie through my TEETH because the answers to the go-to questions people ask (what do you do? where are you from?) are so complicated that if I tell the truth, the conversation becomes all me monologue my life story to somebody who keeps pushing for more details and I am frankly very sick of saying the same things a bazillion times. I'd rather just have casual banter or hear about somebody else for a change.
I live in fear of the day somebody from some bar or party or bus stop or whatever ends up actually KNOWING me and being all 'But- but- but - you said you were an average joe! What's all this!?'

Hahaaa! I totally do this too! I had it happen once, and they were so confused. But it was cool. They got it, eventually, cause they still didn't really get what I did. I think they were secretly glad I hadn't talked their ear off before, too.
