I can almost see this argument, except for the assumption that Buffy's audience would depart in droves if we accidentally catch even a glimpse of Buffy being single AND okay with it. Relationships are one thing, but never being happy outside of a relationship is another thing altogether.

But she was mostly unhappy inside those relationships as well. If not immediately, then eventually.

Really, the takeaway message was "relationships cannot make you happy unless you already are."

But this was Buffy (the show). No one was allowed to be happy alone. They had to be miserable with someone. Or if they were happy with someone, that someone's SO had to either die or become a demon again.

and I would see this as an argument if we weren't talking about a drama. If romance is part of the story (and it is, as well as other elements) why should the protagonist ever really be happy? There has to be drama and problems. Buffy had problems within relationships, too. I don't see how her being unhappy being single makes it inherently anti-feminist.
