I'm gonna sound like a douche, but that's a problem mostly from mainstream games. And for what it's worth, I agree with you. The need for hyper-realistic graphics is killing game budgets, and you hardly see a mainstream game that's out of the norm.

On the other hand, they're not the only games out there, and a lot of minor games or indie games still have more diverse content AND benefit from the new technologies we have today. Someone mentioned Child of Light upthread, and I gotta agree-- the game looks great, and it gets addictive (I've been playing it all day!). There's a lot like it coming out these days.
