Except not all games are hyper-realistic and gritty. There are a lot of options out there for a lot of different tastes.

Have you played/checked out Child of Light, OP? It seems like that might be to your taste, and I'm halfway through and loving it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You act as if games haven't always been trying to improve their graphics. The only difference is that back then, pixels were all the game makers COULD do.

Eh. There are plenty of games coming out that are fantastical, low-budget, and graphically simple, if that's what you're into. There are also plenty of non-gritty games.

Myself, I think there's room to appreciate games of all types. I like a lot of games with hyperrealistic graphics; I also like a lot of games with cartoony or blocky or 8-bit graphics. And the awesome thing about the current market is that there's something out there for everyone.

But there are plenty of games being produced right now that don't have hyper realistic graphics or dark grittiness.

I, personally, want both. But maybe I as for too much variety.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you should look at indie and casual games and some JRPGs too. Some of them have preserved the pixel art, fantasy, and hand-drawn backgrounds that triple A games have eschewed. I haven't touched triple A games with a 10 foot stick, and still manage to have way too many games on my to-play list. While the hyper-realistic gritty style is mainstream, there are more games being made all around, so plenty of options for you if you want to avoid that kind of thing, I think.

I'm gonna sound like a douche, but that's a problem mostly from mainstream games. And for what it's worth, I agree with you. The need for hyper-realistic graphics is killing game budgets, and you hardly see a mainstream game that's out of the norm.

On the other hand, they're not the only games out there, and a lot of minor games or indie games still have more diverse content AND benefit from the new technologies we have today. Someone mentioned Child of Light upthread, and I gotta agree-- the game looks great, and it gets addictive (I've been playing it all day!). There's a lot like it coming out these days.

Given the explosion of indie development in the past few years...there are way more cutesy pixel fantasy games than there are hyperrealistic grimdark megabudget games out there.

Granted, the majority of advertising and vg coverage goes to the big AAA titles, and the sheer number of retro-inspired indies being released makes it difficult to separate the good from the enormous amount of bad.

Tangentally related

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret got me thinking: Has anyone noticed that indie games (that I've noticed, I know there are a lot) are sorta following a pattern in that months ago there were a lot of indie games that were all horror-y, set in dark environments, things stalking you, etc., and now there are more that are all about survival in the wilderness against similar enemies as the first, but with more emphasis on the survival. I'm pretty sure the former was spurred on by Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but not sure what spurred the later. Anyway, what do you people think?

I totally agree, though there are definitely still games today that don't follow the mold. It's super disappointing where all the attention goes, though ... even though it makes me feel like such a weeb to say it, I really don't connect with like 80% of what non-indie western studios make at all.

there's a bunch of games that are coming out that aren't Grimdark Shooter #2323223 though.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Without hyperrealistically styled grimdark AAA games, we wouldn't have The Last of Us. Which, sure, is traumatizing more than charming, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Heh. When the (gorgeous, colourful, stylised) graphics were shown for Zelda Wii U, half the fandom cried foul because they wanted the omggritty TECH DEMO from two years ago.

Same idiots who complained about how Wind Waker was bawww babyish and now it's one of the best-regarded games in the series.

They're losing out. *shrug*

Also, if you want fantasy (and a definite reduction in gritty hyperrealism), try Nintendo.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
While I think this secret sounds a bit too hipster whiny, I sort of agree. I want more variety. I'm sick of the direction a lot of my favorite series of games are headed, too. I'm not so disappointed in the graphics as much as the gameplay and stories, though. I've been pretty dissatisfied with some things lately.

Everybody I've ever told this to went for my throat like I called their mom a whore, so I try to avoid the gaming fandom from now on. Too many angry people.

How dare this be posted when Steam is selling everything but the bathroom fixtures for ridiculously low prices, including thousands of clever indie games that are impossible to choose from when one only has so much cash.

Never mind that most 'gamers' nowadays are just watching Let's Plays and acting like they experienced the games personally.

How the fuck do you remember a time before games became mainstream and manage to completely ignore all the dark and gritty games that existed?
