Have you ever called to check up on your application? Like, "Hey, my name's so-and-so, I turned in an application xyz ago and was just checking to see if it got through ok and if you had any questions?"

That's not as acceptable as it used to be, and it's another layer of stress because unless they say "no calls please," you never know whether a place will like being called or use it as a strike against you.

I agree that this is a great step to take. Places get online applications all the time, but it makes you look good if you basically call and say "hey, I'm serious about working here, please put me on your short list." I never got a callback from anywhere that I didn't call first.
