Job hunting is frustrating as hell.

[personal profile] illiadandoddity 2014-06-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been trying to get a job for the past six months - since January. I've filled out literally over a hundred applications by this point, and in that time I've gotten ONE interview, which I thought went well, but then they never called me back. Maybe it would be a little less frustrating if I didn't feel like I was throwing my applications into a giant hole, never to be seen again. It's gotten to the point where I'm grateful for form e-mails saying "thanks, but no thanks" because at least I got SOMETHING in response.

Not really a unique situation, I know, but I just needed to vent for a bit.

It's hell. Can I ask what field you're searching in?

I'm not even searching in a specific field! Just basic retail jobs, because I need something on my resume that looks more real than "I work for my mom" - it doesn't matter that making and selling custom silk clothing actually takes a whole lot of varied skills, people look at that and go "Yeah right, you 'work' for your mommy."

Sheesh, that's just frustrating as hell indeed.

I know what you mean, although I've only been look for a (summer) job for a month now, I've only gotten one interview that I thought was going somewhere but it turned out not to be the case, and I know I've done at least 30 different job applications to a wide variety of stores. On an unrelated note, Savemarts apparently get their hiring process from the government, because their online applications to be a bagperson takes at least 45 minutes to get through.

Can you get a part time job that might be willing to work with your school schedule?

I feel you. I've given up trying to find a summer job because it's probably too late at this point. All the places I have applied to haven't worked out. :T I hope things work out for you soon!

I hate it. And so many of them want you to have very specific experience, and I'm not sure entry level positions really exist like they used to. I think it's that a lot of managers and bosses just don't want to spend the money on people they'll have to train and let work up. They want to hire someone with expertise. And then those same people complain that stupid inexperienced kids won't just go get jobs. *Facepalm*

I found a job listing yesterday for a receptionist position at a local animal shelter's spay/neuter clinic. List of responsibilities a mile long, minimum of two years' experience in a veterinaty setting required, long disclaimer about how you're likely to be exposed to all sorts of animal diseases, and the hourly rate is less than I was making stocking shelves at a grocery store.

Sounds like they want a low-paid tech assistant if you need that much experience, not a receptionist. I get the animal diseases part, but the rest of it...

I've been there. Put on a pair of slacks and a nice shirt, print up copies of your resume, go to a city where you'd like to work, and pass out copies of your resume.

...yes that works great.

If you live ten years in the past.

No, seriously, I tried that oh last year, and every signal place either refused to take it and told me to fill out stuff online or took it and told me no one ever looked at them.

Have you ever called to check up on your application? Like, "Hey, my name's so-and-so, I turned in an application xyz ago and was just checking to see if it got through ok and if you had any questions?"

Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's not as acceptable as it used to be, and it's another layer of stress because unless they say "no calls please," you never know whether a place will like being called or use it as a strike against you.

I agree that this is a great step to take. Places get online applications all the time, but it makes you look good if you basically call and say "hey, I'm serious about working here, please put me on your short list." I never got a callback from anywhere that I didn't call first.

I've had multiple interviews that I never got anything back from. It is frustrating and it makes me feel like there's something wrong with me.

I feel you.

It is one of the most frustrating things, especially when people my age are getting settled into career's and here's me not even managing to get a permanent job. Makes me feel wonderful I tell you.

Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I sympathize with you, I really do.

I don't know if it's just me, but I find that behaviour from companies to be really rude. Like, the least they could do would be to send some kind of automated email telling you if you got the job or not. But there's just nothing on the other end.

It pisses me off that this kind of treatment is considered acceptable.

You and every other unemployed person should do all of us that are employed a favor and just put a gun to your head now. At least then we wouldn't have to foot the bill for you welfare queens and kings.

Nice try on the trolling here, but I'll bite:

How do you suggest I go about buying a gun to shoot myself in my unemployed head with, oh wise and noble employed person?!
