Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.
Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.
I got the contract manager job. This was when the Great Recession was full speed ahead so I considered getting an interview a win. When he went out of business (screwing your business partners is a bad idea u guise) I walked into a JC Penney's, applied, and got the job. When I was getting ready to leave that job, a customer told me about a non-profit dedicated to alternative fuels. I gave them a call, set up an interview, and got that job. Showing up with a resume is far better than going on the internet. It's harder, but the ROI is so much better.
While I was walking around a city, I'd give my resume to people in suits because I figured they were working, and the admin assistants would have bowls of candy on their desks. I'd put on my puppy eyes and they would give me candy. It was like trick-or-treating.

Question: why are people suddenly assuming I'm a white man? What the hell would that have to do with anything? My gender had nothing to do with why anyone hired me. My military background, my education, my nerve, and my ability to figure out that if something isn't working then I should try something else got me those jobs.

Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.
(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 06:45 am (UTC)(link)Sure, there might be workplaces who think you're 'desperate' for asking about jobs in person, but for every workplace that has that attitude I guarantee you that there are ten other workplaces that will be significantly more likely to hire you if they can put a face to a name. On top of that, actually going out and about will allow you to see jobs that might not be advertised online, and if you hand out resumes to places that aren't advertising at this moment you might end up being the first on the list if they start hiring next week, or the week after.
For some additional anecdata, in my social circle the majority of my friends got their jobs either through networking (which, by the way, is statistically the best way to get a job), volunteering somewhere and later applying for a paid position or - surprise surprise - handing out resumes in person or cold calling people. And this is a mix of non white and white women, btw.
TL;DR, icey is giving decent advice here, and you are being destructively fatalistic. There's no need for this attitude.
Re: Job hunting is frustrating as hell.
Also, this was during the Great Recession. There were a lot of desperate people and all the employers knew that. But if 50 desperate people e-mail you and 1 desperate person shows up at your door, who is going to stand out?
My being white didn't have as much to do with it as my being awesome. :)
