She seemed really stereotypical to me???

She wasn't even intelligent. But she had the little "foreign accent" and her personality was submissive, shy and quiet. I didn't find her interesting at all.

She knows karate and apparently that negates everything?

Annnnnnd she's knocked out of the end battle while the white hero dude saves the day (and her while he's at it) doesn't really accomplish much and was pretty damned stereotypical in a lot of ways, as you've pointed out.

I really don't get the Mako Mori love out there. I really don't. Not when you have legit leads in action films like Ripley to compare her to, who are real badasses with their own stories and never existed to be The Chick.

It might be a case of the bar being set low due to deprivation. It's been a really long time since we've had a Ripley, we're living in a post-Twilight era, and here's a nonsexualized, non-white lead who has her own story and personality apart from which dude's gonna stick it to her. Same thing with Frozen, everybody creams their shorts because oh thank god here's the first animated movie in ages with two female leads and one of them isn't a diabolical villain, so what if they barely interact and never make an intelligent decision. Seems like people are just thirsty as hell right now and everything that isn't total bilge towards female characters is just The Best Thing Ever.

This. For everything you said.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it's lowered expectations and wishful thinking, mostly. A small segment of the fandom is waaaaaay keen on having a complex female POC character and they're just so happy to have anything. From the fan buzz, you'd almost think Mako was the lead, which is a bit of a surprise when you see the movie. Or at least, it was for me.

You mean a Japanese woman is going to carry traits most Japanese women carry due to the way their country is?????

Wow, color me surprised.

Next you'll tell me a Spaniard has a Spanish accent!

Wow, this is so wrong I'm not sure how to reply.
You sound like some retard fanboy. Go back to your DBZ fanfiction.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
da

What a lame reply. Seriously, are you trolling with this? DBZ? Fanboy? We're like, 99% girls here and DBZ, did you pull this insult from a bag of 1990's zingers?

Also, ayrt is pretty much right. She had a Japanese actress, because the actress is *gasp* Japanese. She sees that one guy as a mentor, and *gasp* shows him respect, because that's extremely important in Japan. What are you so butthurt over? I don't even care about the character, and think you're overreacting.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I guess the retardation in this thread is contagious.
Mako apologists are a joke. Your movie is shit and so is your favorite little Japanese female character stereotype.

This strawman argument about showing respect to some guy has nothing to do with anything.

"retardation"

do I even need to reply to this comment? you could have at least pretended harder not to be a troll.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Is a female character like Mako acceptable to you as long as she's not Asian?

And you sound like someone who has never experienced Japanese culture firsthand.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny how you probably don't think that comment was racist, when it fact it's a type of racism that's common as dirt.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe some people don't think you need to be loud, outgoing and confident to be interesting?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
It helps though

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Speak for yourself? Quietly competent works for me. I even prefer people like that IRL.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I don't remember her being shy or submissive at all. Maybe respects the authority of her mentor, and that's it? So what? That hardly defines her.

And I'm sorry, but fuck you for criticizing the "foreign accent" of a foreign actress. The actress is Japanese, and she plays a Japanese woman. What the hell was she supposed to sound like?

I think you're the one who is trying to make her be stereotypical. I'd agree with you that she's not that interesting of a character, and women aren't automatically badass because they know karate, etc. but stereotypical? Because she has an accent? omg.
