Yeah, everyone can stop creaming themselves over Pacific Rim now. In the end, it's still a movie that claimed to be about all nations uniting to fight monsters but nope, we still get a generic white male lead. He's actually just about as interesting as Aaron Johnson in Godzilla.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it still 2013 where you are?

You can argue that Beckett wasn't even really the lead in that there were no defined leads. Mako's story held just as much depth and details as Beckett's. Becket was a one note cliche co-lead. Mako's story was another cliche.

No one's story stood out. No one's story was original.

The movie was just a show case for mecha and monsters.

That's what gets me. This was supposed to be about the whole world banding together to fight kaiju, but the majority of the people are still white even though they're in Hong Kong? The Chinese team don't even get individual names OR any dialogue in English? WTF...

I'm the opposite of you. I thought she was overhyped before I saw the movie, and she would just be a Strong Token Minority Female Character whose story wasn't about anything but proving that she could keep up with the boys and kicked ass and talked tough all the time. But when I saw it, I related to her. So when there are complaints that she wasn't strong enough, I think, "I know, that's why I like her."

She's a female POC action movie protagonist and they don't fuck up anything about her or her storyline horribly. That's not a bad thing.

I get where you're coming from, if you were looking for something more than that. The movie was overhyped and it's a big problem. I think Mako fits in pretty well with what the movie was, and why it was good. It was a really well-executed, passionately made, monsters and robots movie that didn't make any awful mistakes and that was unconcerned about being formulaic. And Mako is kind of exactly the female POC main character that a film like that would have, if films like that usually had female POC main characters who were there primarily to be main characters.

Agreed. I really enjoyed the movie, because it was exactly what I expected it to be, in a fun way. There's something to be said for the solidly-executed cliches.
Certainly not the ~masterpiece tumblr made it out to be, but I wasn't expecting it to be.

So many people apparently made this movie out to be something it's not. It was an entertaining popcorn movie and that's it. Monsters and giant robots and a fun couple hours, but there's nothing revolutionary or original about it.

[personal profile] peablossom 2014-06-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. I loved it, it was gleeful fun, and it was a conglomeration of pretty much every monster/robot movie ever. But it wasn't groundbreaking and new.

I get that, OP. Overhype can really kill your enjoyment of a film if your expectations are set high because of it.

I think this is just inherently what happens in you enter a fandom AFTER it's been over-hyped. It's a good movie, she's a good character, but it's not exactly the most groundbreaking film ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd put her on the same level as the red headed woman from The Wolverine in terms of characterization and independent narrative.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you learned the valuable lesson of not trusting Tumblr users.

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2014-06-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I get the feel, OP.

While I think Mako had a very good story and personality, my personal disappointment came from the idea that I thought she was the leading protagonist (most of this hype obviously came from Tumblr) and not whoever-the-actual-lead-is (I forgot his name. XD) While Mako does have a story just as important to him and certainly more poignant, it's clear she's still not the main character. As a fellow Asian gal, I get that. But overall I thought the movie was good. Not masterpiece amazing like Tumblr makes it, but good. *shrugs*

I wanted more of her doing stuff, more of everyone else, and less of the annoying whitebread lead and the whitebread clone.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
She seemed really stereotypical to me???

She wasn't even intelligent. But she had the little "foreign accent" and her personality was submissive, shy and quiet. I didn't find her interesting at all.

She knows karate and apparently that negates everything?

Pretty sure she wasn't the protagonist. She was a main character, but not the protagonist, that American guy was the protagonist. An English degree can tell me if I'm misunderstanding what qualifies as a protagonist, but I don't think the film was about her enough for her to qualify.

I liked her all right, but she wasn't all she could have been. I didn't have much enthusiasm about her, but then again, the whole film didn't really ignite a lot of enthusiasm in me. So many potentially good elements that were played out in just a mediocre fashion. Not a bad movie, but just not good, either.

Then again, I don't touch tumblr, so I guess I had no reason to be disappointed with the hype.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that people can't be arsed to remember the guy's name but can remember hers says that she plays a more important role.

Personally: Monsters and Robots> people characters.

THIS. I saw so much about that movie being the most brilliant thing ever that I actually had some hopes for it. And then it was just another boring Godzilla/Transformers movie.

I think a lot of the megafans on Tumblr can give off the wrong impression of the movie. They see Stacker & Mako and focus on them as evidence of "groundbreaking new scifi", but that ignores the fact that the movie was pretty heavily based on really stereotypes and tropes. I mean, let's look at the cast:

- hero with a troubled past, has to overcome his misgivings and learn to trust again (Raleigh)
- underdog being kept down by the system and prevented from reaching their dream, helped out by the hero (Mako)
- hardass general who loves his troops and gets shit done (Stacker)
- two bickering male scientists, soft vs. hard science (Newt and Hermann)
- nice older guy who tries to keep the peace (Herc)
- hotshot who's amazing at his job but rubs everyone the wrong way and picks a fight with the hero (Chuck)

It's a fun movie, don't get me wrong, but yeah, it's not as progressive as people want to think. Hell, there's only one female character of real significance, and the other one gets a few lines right before dying. In terms of gender representation, I'd say it was actually pretty REgressive.
