I think a lot of the megafans on Tumblr can give off the wrong impression of the movie. They see Stacker & Mako and focus on them as evidence of "groundbreaking new scifi", but that ignores the fact that the movie was pretty heavily based on really stereotypes and tropes. I mean, let's look at the cast:

- hero with a troubled past, has to overcome his misgivings and learn to trust again (Raleigh)
- underdog being kept down by the system and prevented from reaching their dream, helped out by the hero (Mako)
- hardass general who loves his troops and gets shit done (Stacker)
- two bickering male scientists, soft vs. hard science (Newt and Hermann)
- nice older guy who tries to keep the peace (Herc)
- hotshot who's amazing at his job but rubs everyone the wrong way and picks a fight with the hero (Chuck)

It's a fun movie, don't get me wrong, but yeah, it's not as progressive as people want to think. Hell, there's only one female character of real significance, and the other one gets a few lines right before dying. In terms of gender representation, I'd say it was actually pretty REgressive.

I'm not sure it's regressive. That's going a little far. I don't think a movie where you have a woman main character who's central to the film, as well developed as any other character in the film, and who's presented basically on her own terms, not in relation to a male character, can be called actively regressive. I agree it's not as progressive as it could be and I wish there were more female characters but I wouldn't say it's regressive.
