As one of those people who is sick of the Depp/Burton movies, I LOVED this movie.

This and this.

I think it's likely one of the few Depp/Burton movies lately that has actually worked, with the possible exception of Fear and Loathing.

And I think Sondheim liked the staging.

Same here.

Me too! I really don't care much for anything else, but really liked this one!

I think both are sort of bad. And I generally like musicals.

I dislike both. I don't like the music and people unknowingly eating human flesh makes me sick. But still, the movie was well made - one of the better musical movies, imo.

I think a lot of it depends on the cast? The Depp/Burton one is good, but man it doesn't compare to the Michael Ball/Imelda Staunton 2012 revival. That was great.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
That revival was AMAZING!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-27 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, agreed. They were incredible to watch. :D

I love the Tim Burton version, but I wish HBC could actually sing. That part is one of the best alto belts in theater, and they gave it to a woman who sounds like a young girl when she sings.

Her "Worst Pies in London" was the most lackluster I've ever heard. For that matter, I found Depp to be pretty lackluster in terms of energy as well. I mean, I know it's film and not stage, so you don't have to emote as much, but it would be nice to still see some energy (plus Sweeney is one of those characters that you can be big with even on film and it works, in my opinion).

I hated what they had to do to that score to allow for the primarily-non-singer actors to handle it. ;____;

THANK you.

Also, Sweeney Todd is a baritone part, and Johnny Depp's a baritone the way I'm an astronaut werewolf.

Why can't they just do what they used to do and have the actors lip-sync an actual singer's performance?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you enjoy it, have fun. (And unlike us Revival fans, at least you have a video to watch!)

While not the same, there are bootlegs out there. I don't have one or I would gladly share, but keep a eye out!

Sorry, I just don't see it. And I have no problem with Depp/Burton movies (and I didn't think this one was terrible or anything), but the stage show, specifically George Hearn, pwns. Sacha Baron Cohen was excellent, though. He might be my favorite Pirelli.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's a pretty good movie on it's own, and I like it for what it is, but they absolutely murdered the music. Some of the cast manage to sing okay, but even then there are still huge chunks of the songs that got cut.

I just don't understand why you would adapt a musical and omit half the music.

I liked the movie. It's actually one of those good film adaptions of a show alongside "Chicago", "Rent", "Les Miserables" and "The King and I" (2004 Phantom movie is pretty to look at, but lacks decent singers, except Patrick Wilson, who is amazing). Despite a truncated version of the original score, the cast still manages to pull it through.

As for the stage version? I love both the 1982 tour with George Hearn and Angela Lansbury and the 2001 Concert with George Hearn and Patti LuPone.

I love it too, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-26 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, the Burton/Depp downfall started AFTER this movie since I loved Sweeney and I agree with this secret.
