It's a pretty good movie on it's own, and I like it for what it is, but they absolutely murdered the music. Some of the cast manage to sing okay, but even then there are still huge chunks of the songs that got cut.

I just don't understand why you would adapt a musical and omit half the music.

I just don't understand why you would adapt a musical and omit half the music.

I have a feeling it had something to do with the MPAA and their weird approach to sex vs violence. Since the film ended up an R for bloodiness, it had to give somewhere, so several of the really sexually creepy songs (all the Beggar Woman's, the Judge's "Johanna - Mea Culpa") got nixed.

Another possibility is that theatres didn't want a 3-hr film as they can't pack in as many showings a day. (James Cameron's Avatar was a notable exception here.)
